Kai Kalama at Estancia La Jolla

June 11

Acoustic island musician Kai Kalama has been singing and performing since the age of six. He then played guitar and sang with his brother, who he has maintained a duo with since he was 12 years old. He was featured as one of the 36 semi-finalists on Season 8 of American Idol, and was also a winning contestant on the NBC summer game show The Winner in 2013. He brings to the stage a one-man production, with a large range of musical styles, from Hawaiian to hip-hop. Kalama has been further developing his rich, soulful voice. He is mastering the art of “live looping” with his use of a loop pedal to create the sound of an entire band. His beach-flavored covers are well suited for Estancia’s shoreline vibe.

Based in Valley Center, actress, dancer, and pop-country singer Morgan Leigh began singing professionally at age fifteen and has worked as a costumed Disney princess at parties and corporate events. She formed the six-member Morgan Leigh Band in 2012, debuting at that year’s San Diego County Fair. In early 2013, she appeared as a contestant on season twelve of the TV show American Idol. Her band was also among five finalists in the Bank of the West Celebrates America Opening Band Contest, which awarded the winner an opening slot for Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo and Loverboy at Memorial Park in Omaha, Nebraska. Citing among her influences Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Taylor Swift, and Carrie Underwood, she dropped her Kickstarter-funded debut album Trouble in 2014, and she has continued to release EPs and singles such as her 2024 track “Small Town.”

The Field of Dreamz Festival bill is headlined by local ska-flavored pop-punkers Slightly Stoopid, who played their first paid gig in 1994 at Soma. They released their first new music in six years a couple of years ago with “Got Me On The Run,” a collaboration with the band’s longtime local friends in Pepper, who are also slated to appear at the East Village festival. Slightly Stoopid recently premiered a new music video for “The Upside Down” featuring guests B-Real and Chali 2na. Co-headliners Sublime regrouped last year with occasional San Diegan Jakob Nowell (Jakob’s Castle) replacing his late father Bradley Nowell as the band’s frontman. Pepper, who moved to San Diego county from Hawaii in 1999, landed on top of Billboard's Reggae Chart with their 8th studio album, Local Motion. Also appearing will be the guitar-based Band Of Gringos, all born and raised in Ocean Beach, although they’re quick to point out “We’re not a reggae band like 95 percent of the bands that come out of OB…transcending generations is our goal.” Boostive is known for blending Afrobeat, hip-hop, world music, and ambient electronic music, and the bill includes Denm, Z-Trip, Stephen Marley, and the Elovaters.

David Rosales at Estancia La Jolla

June 14

Chickenbone Slim & the Biscuits at Humphreys Backstage Music Club

June 16

Blues singer-guitarist Larry Teves - aka Chickenbone Slim - named his band The Biscuits because biscuits are his favorite food. His 2014 album Gone was recorded live to tape, to accurately reflect the songs as he was developing and performing them in live shows. He has continued to bring his band into the studio for subsequent releases such as 2017’s The Big Beat, while Serve It To Me Hot dropped in 2021 via Vizztone Records. The Chickenbone Slim & the Biscuits full-length Damn Good and Ready was nominated for both Best Blues Album and Best Album at the 2024 San Diego Music Awards, where the group was also nominated as Best Blues Artist.
