Dude Cervantes brings his Peter Green tribute to town April 7

Recreating the music of a key figure in the 1960s blues scene

Blues For Greeny is a tribute to early Fleetwood Mac songwriter and guitarist Peter Green fronted by Daniel “Dude” Cervantes of Howlin’ Rain, Mrs. Henry, and The Band tribute Chest Fever. A singer-songwriter, record producer, and label owner, he's also a solo recording artist whose album The Ride or Die of Dude Cervantes & The Panchos, recorded live at The Hotel Cafe, was released in November 2025.

Before he passed away in 2020 at the age of 73, Peter Green was a key figure in the 1960s blues scene. A self-taught guitarist who started on a hand-me-down guitar at age 10, he joined John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers in 1965, replacing Eric Clapton in that band the following year. He founded Fleetwood Mac in 1967 with Mick Fleetwood and Jeremy Spencer, later adding John McVie to the lineup. Known for an ethereal, soulful, and melodic guitar sound, many of his recordings feature him playing a Gibson Les Paul, noted by B.B. King as having the "sweetest tone."

San Diego-born Cervantes attended the same high school as Cameron Crowe, University of San Diego High School. In Blues For Greeny, he'll be backed by his band The Panchos, featuring guitarist Dylan Donovan of psychedelic prog rockers Sacri Monti, drummer Justin De La Vega, and bassist-singer Ryan Grenda.

Cervantes told the Reader that he started playing with De La Vega and Grenda while doing his “Cervantes” solo act, “Then it just kind of evolved into asking Dylan Donovan. I’ve always been such a big fan of Dylan as a guitarist. I’ve known him since about 2015. When I first heard him in his band Sacri Monti, I thought he was amazing. It’s two guitars, drums, and bass. It’s about as rock ‘n’ roll as you can get.”

“All around, all the dudes in The Panchos are absolute sweethearts,” says Cervantes, “and total rippers on their instruments.” They play Green's early recorded covers of artists such as Elmore James, B.B. King, and Howlin Wolf, as well as classic Fleetwood Mac blues-rock tracks like “Oh Well,” "The Green Manalishi (With the Two-Pronged Crown)" (which has been covered by the Melvins and Judas Priest), "Black Magic Woman" (famously covered by Carlos Santana), and dreamy guitar ballads “Albatross” and “Need Your Love So Bad.” The band's YouTube page showcases their covers of lesser known Green-associated deep tracks like "Something Inside of Me," "Like It This Way," and "My Heart Beats Like a Hammer."

Blues For Greeny kicked off its debut tour in Cincinnati, OH at The Redmoor on February 23. They'll appear at the Belly Up Tavern on April 7, opening for headliner Coco Montoya. The band will also be performing at the Encinitas Library on April 12, and Cervantes will appear at Vista’s Booze Brothers Brewing Company on April 10.
