Margo Schwab's San Diego Social Diary is THE source on San Diego's beautiful people.
She reports in her latest edition that Papa Doug Manchester, real estate baron and owner of the U-T, will marry his Siberian girlfriend, Geniya Derzhavina, before Christmas.
Schwab did not reveal the exact date, to protect the couples' privacy. This assumes Manchester's divorce will have gone through, although Schwab didn't mention that.
Don: I am in no way disrespecting you, but who the hell cares.
aardvark: You mean you don't expect to be invited? Best, Don Bauder
Don: I suppose our invites were lost in the mail.
aardvark: They should have been delivered with your Sunday paper. Best, Don Bauder
Don: I was out of town until Sunday afternoon--some criminal must have stolen them. Of course, they didn't want the paper.
Humorous aardvark - what I was going to say.
shirleyberan: You haven't been invited either? Best, Don Bauder
If you didn't get invited, it means you just don't wear enough bronzer to run with Doug's crowd.
So, when you get a mail order bride from Russia, does she come COD?
She might bring her own cod. Or caviar.
dbdriver: This will not be a BYOCaviar party. Guaranteed. Best, Don Bauder
Bob: I never said she was a mail order bride. My column on her Aug. 21 did not say that. Best, Don Bauder
Alas, I didn't get my invite, either. Must not be as beautiful as I thought I was. (puts glasses back on, facing mirror) EGADs, who's tha,...er,...oh.
dbdriver: To get invited to these events, you not only have to be beautiful. You have to be rich, too. If you qualify on both scores, complain. Best, Don Bauder
MARGO ALSO SAYS FOXHILL AT $28 MILLION IS A STEAL. In the same issue in which she broke the news of the coming Papa Doug nuptials, Margo Schwab noted that the Foxhill estate of the late Helen Copley is for sale for $28 million. That includes 8 acres. Foxhill is "worth every penny" at that price, says Margo. Foxhole, which is spread over four blocks, and belonged to the late David Copley, Helen's son, is up for sale for $7.95 million. Best, Don Bauder
Oh--I forgot to ask--does anyone think this will get any coverage in the U-T?
Oh, it will, for sure. The David had coverage of his soirees on his yacht in the Mediterranean that featured the "beautiful people"printed in the UT at the same time the paper was laying off, protesting that it could not pay its workers more, and a whole host of such things. Stranger things have happened, and will happen soon. Dougie is probably more (if that is possible) unaware of how people regard him than David was.
Visduh: You are pointing out a fault of the Copley family. The company often had abysmal labor relations. Yet both David and Helen held luxurious parties and Burl Stiff covered them for the paper. This exacerbated the friction. Sadly, I suspect no one told Helen or David the negative effect this was happening. Best, Don Bauder
aardvark: The U-T has had several photos of Papa Doug with his bride-to-be. So it might be covered. Best, Don Bauder
