U-T referred to as Manchester's "personal campaign machine"

Local Dems criticize editorial antics, use them as fundraising plug

Francine Busby, chair of the San Diego County Democratic Party, is using U-T San Diego publisher Doug Manchester's recent purchase of eight county weeklies as a fundraising strategy.

Busby has sent fellow Democrats a letter saying, "It's a sad day for journalistic integrity in San Diego County." She cites the eight purchases and notes that, "Since acquiring the U-T, Manchester has turned it into his personal campaign machine. He showers favored candidates like Carl DeMaio, Brian Bilbray, and Kevin Faulconer with front-page editorials, fawning coverage, and full-page ads."

Therefore, she asks local Democrats to donate ten dollars to help "get the truth to the voting public."

However, how do you explain today’s U-T article which is critical of Kevin Faulconer’s assertion that Prop B saves $1 billion that can be used now for infrastructure maintenance/repairs? Isn’t Faulconer the Republican’s and Manchester’s anointed one? Did this slip through the editorial cracks? The U-T article also cited Mike Aguirre, noting that the pension is costing the City more, not less. http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/nov/05/faulconers-flawed-claim-of-1b-for-roads/

Brian: I comment on that above, as do you. I cannot believe that the author of the story wrote it and slipped it past his editors. The decision to run that story came from the top. The author might have explained to top management that the ad was completely misleading, and the paper decided to over its fanny.

It will be interesting to hear what Faulconer and Sanders say. My guess -- just a guess -- is that their response was coordinated with U-T top brass before the story ran.

Overall, the gist of the story was surprisingly straightforward. As I have said, congratulations to the U-T. Best, Don Bauder
