Regrouping: Spinoff bands from the Screamin’ YeeHaws

Twenty years of Live Wire will get aMiniature back together.
Twenty years of Live Wire will get aMiniature back together.

With the Reader’s local-music database now topping 3200 bands, 1000 MP3s, and over 8100 musicians, several new bands (and a few reunited ensembles) will soon be competing for your dollars and downloads.

Cowpunk singer Nick Bone of the Screamin’ YeeHaws and original YeeHaws bassist Jimmy Dean have cofounded Nick Bone and the Big Scene, alongside lead guitarist Ritchie Orduno, Jr., drummer Martin Robles, and bassist/producer Dirty Steve. Their debut single “House Boat” appears on a new San Diego band compilation from Ship Records, Against the Current.

YeeHaws guitarist Chris “Silent” Henry has formed country-ish rockers Hobo Torch along with his cousin Wes and original YeeHaws drummer Clay. “It’s country music from a country you wish you grew up in,” says Henry, “where rock bands can have horns and, though the music is unlike any other you know of, it feels familiar. We ain’t reinventing the wheel.” The band also includes Henry’s Pawnshop Cowboys bandmates Jimmy K, Rob Logic, and Shantih.

Film School bassist Lorelei Plotczyk has left that band to partner with Mu mainman Itai Faierman for a new still-unnamed group. “We’re in rehearsal and should be ready to gig in a couple months,” says Faierman.

Two players from blues brokers Zapf Dingbats have a new country-blues duo, Chris Clarke and Dane Terry, who’ll debut their pre-war blues, Americana, folk, and original tunes on September 29 at the Kensington Café.

Mostly inactive for the past six years, Sprung Monkey will reunite to play with P.O.D. and Jon Goodhue on October 13 at San Diego Harley-Davidson in Kearny Mesa.

A No Knife reunion happens October 20 in the Mississippi Room at the Lafayette Hotel, where aMiniature will also regroup to play a celebration of nearby Live Wire’s 20th year on El Cajon Boulevard. The same night at Brick by Brick, Rob Wickman, aka ClubMan, plays a reunion gig with his hip-hop/metal band Hi Def Dynamite, along with bassist Rice Enright, formerly of Ghoulspoon.

Pink Army has reconstituted its founding trio of Alicia Randolph, Charisma Kain (also seen in commercials for the Kidz Bop CDs), and Lia Marie Johnson, who’d been replaced by Maddie Simpson, who was replaced by Lauren Taylor. The reunited ’tween trio is working with vocal coach Jan Smith, aka Mama J (Usher, Rob Thomas, Drake, Ciara, the Band Perry, Sugarland ), who was seen throughout Justin Bieber’s theatrical release Never Say Never.
