According to a rumor making the rounds at the UT, "Papa Doug" Manchester, owner of the paper, will as expected buy the Orange County Register, and the announcement will be made Thursday or Friday. The rumor of Manchester's interest in buying the Register was first reported on this blog March 4. Since then, Manchester has confirmed that he was in negotiations to buy it. There are also rumors that he will buy some of the smaller papers owned by the Register's parent, which has emerged from bankruptcy.

Is there a call out for pallbearers for those papers? This isn't any sort of good news for anyone.

Well, if you are an "Idol" fan, you got plenty of news about it in the UT. The UT is definitely more of a propaganda organ than it was under the Copleys, and that is saying a lot, because in the Copley reign the paper was a tool of the moneybags. Orange County people should be warned. Best, Don Bauder

Absolutely! With all the real news out there in the world, and plenty of it locally, there's no justification for all this front page coverage of little Jessica and her rivals and travails. But day after day, where is it? Right in the center of the front page. Sigh. Just when you think it cannot get worse at that paper, it does.

Remember, Lynch has spent his entire career in radio -- mostly sports -- and has a spotty record. He has a heavy hand in the news business. He probably watches the Idol show. Best, Don Bauder

OK, I am an Idool fan! I admit it. Those kids have talent and that is always interesting.

You're young enough, SurfPup. Why don't you enter the competition? Best, Don Bauder
