Albertsons Grocery Store on Coronado Avenue, the last chain supermarket south of Palm Ave serving the South Bay/Egger Highlands neighborhood, Imperial Beach and Nestor announced they will be closing at the end of June. Store Manager Billy Miles said it was a corporate decision involving an older store “We’re renters here and the revenue doesn’t justify the upkeep of the building.” Miles expressed concern about the neighborhood with the loss of the store, “I could have been at a store two miles from my home but I drive 20 minutes to a community I love with a smile on my face.” Albertsons, which typically employs around 60 workers at its stores will be moving dislocated employees to its other locations in San Diego according to Miles “You’ll see a familiar face when you enter any of our other stores.” Several employee’s from other business’ located in the center said they had heard rumors that an independent grocery store had already signed on to replace the Albertsons.

Albertson's, especially since the Idaho corporation of that name dismembered itself and the stores in this area are now operated by Super Valu, has been retrenching overall in No County, too. But they did relatively recently open a new store on East Vista Way. That doesn't make up for the contractions they've made in Oceanside and some other spots around here. Much of their repostioning may be a result of prior consolidations, such as when a group of smallish Alpha Beta supers combined with Lucky. Then when Alberston's bought up Lucky and rebranded those stores (where they were allowed to keep them) as Albertson's stores, they had no consistency in size or offerings. Worse yet, with that misguided acquisition, Albertson's shot itself in the groin and ended up going out of existence itself.
