Once again, there is so much jazz coming up that decisions will have to be made. Here are some prime choices.
September 5
It's a Tribute to Cedar Walton, the legendary pianist who just passed away last month at the age of 79. Bassist Rob Thorsen leads a quartet featuring Joshua White on the piano, with Gilbert Castellanos on trumpet, and Brett Sanders on drums. Dizzy's, 8 pm. $15
September 6
Vocalist Rebecca Jade brings a quartet into 98 Bottles for an evening of funk/R&B and jazz. As a singer, Jade has it all: precise intonation, soul and the ability to swing. She will be joined by Micah Whitley on keyboards/vocals, Michael Kennedy on bass/vocals, Damion Willis on drums/vocals and special guest Wayne Braxton on saxophone. 8 pm $15. Or, if vocals aren't your thing:
Dizzy's is having a CD release party for The Matt Smith Neu Jazz Trio featuring Smith on the drums, with Ed Kornhauser on piano and Mackenzie Leighton on bass. 8 pm $15. Or:
Gilbert Castellanos is holding court at the Westgate Hotel, with guitar virtuoso Peter Sprague and bass stalwart Rob Thorsen. The Westgate has superior acoustics, but the small room fills up quickly--get there early. No cover charge.
September 7
Vocalist Lorraine Castellanos salutes Eydie Gorme at 98 Bottles. Latin classics and the Great American Songbook. With Joey Carano on guitar, Rob Thorsen on bass and Fernando Gomez on drums. Lorraine always draws a crowd, so early arrival is recommended. 8 pm $15. Or:
Dizzy's presents from Afro Truko to Dizzy Gillespie. Percussion master Charlie Chavez leads an 11 piece salsa band including vocalists Maguito Chavez and Roberto Lopez with Doug Meeuwseen on trumpet, Andy Geib on trombone and flute, Patrick Escalante on trombone, Gabriel Sundy on tenor and baritone saxophone, Julio Valdes on piano, Ignacio Arango on bass, and special guest Georges Balmaseda on vocals. 8 pm $15
