Ian Tordella : Twin Tenors @ 98 Bottles, May 24
This is Vol.III in the series, pairing Tordella with LA sax man Joe Berry
Saxophonist Ian Tordella continues his Twin Tenors series, which spotlights up-and-coming saxophone talent (as well as established players) in the southern California area, accompanied by an outstanding local rhythm section comprised of bassist Rob Thorsen, pianist Kamau Kenyatta, and drummer Fernando Gomez.
The upcoming concert will be held at 98 Bottles on May 24, and will feature multi-instrumentalist Joe Berry, whose main axe is the saxophone, although he is also fluent in bass, guitar, piano and flute and Tuvan throat singing, a startling technique that produces two notes at once.
I caught a little bit of Berry on YouTube, laying down a walking bass line while warbling "I Got Rhythm" in the altissimo register, all at the same time, on the tenor saxophone. Blew my mind.
I've always enjoyed Tordella's playing, but it seems to me he really shines in the company of another horn player. I'm looking for sparks to fly when these two get together.
Concert begins at 8 pm. Tickets are $12
