Sleeping People Hit Snooze in Odd Time

Following a three-year hiatus, San Diego instrumental math quartet Sleeping People have reunited for four West Coast dates to herald the release of their new LP, NOTRUF, in a limited run of 1,000 vinyl.

On Thursday, I caught their San Francisco gig at a packed Bottom of the Hill, where calculating bass lines and syncopated polyrhythmic stutters grasped for common time before giving way to foreboding prog-metal churns - all revolving closely around the mind-boggling traps of drummer Brandon Relf (Innerds).

With an ear for the epic, the band's new material relies on longer builds and darker, recurring motifs that are equally at home with Faraquet, King Crimson, and Tool – making them the perfect act to share the stage with moody instrumental post-rock 9-piece KATA at Soda Bar on Friday, August 10.

KATA will also be celebrating an album release for their debut The Rising on CD and, with your help, double LP.

Read more about The Rising and how you can make it happen here.

Rob Crow (Pinback) will also be performing as Devfits, a Devo/Misfits inspired performance piece.
