Will Venable only did one thing wrong in Wednesday evening's loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. He failed to hit a triple. Since 2010, Venable has now had five shots at being the first Padres player to hit for the cycle, this time the elusive triple foiling that effort. Previously, Venable fell short by a double the first time, and by home runs on the subsequent three occasions.
Venable led off Wednesday's game with a home run, the sixth time he has done that in his career.
In a relatively slow-moving game, Padres starter Jeff Suppan (2-3) wasn't as sharp as he has recently been, surrendering 5 runs on 8 hits with 4 walks in 4 2/3 innings to his former team. Both teams had 10 hits, but Cardinals starter Lance Lynn (7-1) was a little better. Lynn allowed 3 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks, over six innings of work.
The Padres fell to 16-29 while being swept three games by St. Louis.
After Venable's lead-off homer, with one out, Lynn walked Yonder Alonso and then hit Jesus Guzman with a pitch. Chase Headley then hit a single to right field, scoring Alonso and moving Guzman to third base. Nick Hundley then grounded out, but Guzman scored and the Padres jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a half-inning.
The Cardinals then got even in their half of the first. Rafael Furcal singled off of Suppan to lead off the inning, and then Skip Schumaker doubled to center to drive Furcal home. With two outs, David Freese singled to center to bring Schumaker home, and after a single by Yadier Molina that sent Freese to second base, Matt Adams singled to right field to plate Freese.
After an inning, the score was tied 3-3.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the fifth inning. Matt Holliday opened the frame by lining a single to left field off of Suppan, and then Carlos Beltran homered to right field, and the Cardinals led 5-3. That was all that St. Louis needed. The Cardinals got an insurance run in the bottom or the seventh inning when Freese hit a home run to left field off of Padres reliever Brad Brach.
The Padres failed to get a runner on base in the eighth and ninth innings, and Cardinals closer Jason Motte notched his eighth save of the season. The Cardinals improved to 25-19. With the win, the Cards remain 1/2 game ahead of the Cincinnati Reds in the National League central division, while the Padres loss drops them into sole possession of last place in the National League West.
Notes:
On the injury front, Cory Luebke underwent Tommy John surgery today, no word from doctors on how it went. More on that as we get word. Chase Headley was back in the line-up on Wednesday after missing Tuesday's game with a back issue. Chase was 1 for 4 with a run batted in.
Carlos Quentin continues to rehab in Arizona, playing in games there. No timeline on his return. He is accompanied by Logan Forsythe, who is also playing. Forsythe is due to be eligible to come off of the 60-day disabled list on June 3rd. Huston Street is playing long-ball catch and is reporting no issues. Again, no timeline on Street's return from the 15-day DL.
Thursday, the Padres will visit the New York Mets to begin a four game series. The first match-up will pit recent Padres acquisition Eric Stults (0-0, 2.70) against former Padres prospect Jeremy Hefner (0-1, 2.25). The first pitch is scheduled for 4:10 PM PSDT, and can be watched on Fox Sports San Diego (presuming you can get that, or else your local sports bar might oblige) or you can always listen on radio, XX1090 AM.
