Are American Engineers in Short Supply?
surfpuppy619, I don't want to say that I doubt the veracity of your friend's claim since I don't know her. But with over 600 companies in Ireland alone, I highly doubt it's just about savings on labor costs. Ireland is not Mexico, Indonesia, China, etc. They aren't paying these people a couple of dollars a week. As the CEO of Cisco said, it's about the tax advantages.— March 28, 2011 9:25 a.m.

Are American Engineers in Short Supply?
According to the 60 Minutes report, over 600 U.S. multinationals have shifted research facilities, manufacturing facilities and/or some regional headquarters to Ireland, employing more than 100K people. The reason is the Irish corp tax rate which is 12.5%. If a company makes profits overseas and leaves them there, then the IRS can't tax those profits. That's why so many companies are leaving their money offshore.Japan is said to be lowering its corp tax rate this year. That will leave the US with the highest corp. tax rate in the developed world. Let me play devil's advocate for a minute, Don. Why is it reprehensible? Let's say that I am IBM. I've been in Ireland for more than 50 yrs. They are charging me a 12.5% tax on my profits there as opposed to the 35% I would have to pay here. Why does that make me the bad guy? Put another way, There are hundreds of billions of dollars of profits kept offshore every year because of the tax rate. Why not lower the corp. tax rate to be competitive with these countries, revamp the tax code to eliminate the loop holes companies have and bring both the profits and maybe some jobs back onshore. Which is better, 35% of nothing or 15% of a few hundred billion, with some jobs thrown in as a bonus. I'm generalizing a bit, but I'm sure you get my point.— March 28, 2011 9:16 a.m.
City Advertising for Redistricting Support Services
Founder, Pardon me for asking what may be a stupid question, but how is Carl DeMaio Jerry Sanders biggest threat? Sanders is termed out so San Diego will elect a new Mayor next year. So whether DeMaio is elected or not, I don't see what it would have to do with being Sanders' "biggest threat". Perhaps you would clarify your statement.— March 27, 2011 7:30 p.m.
ANOTHER HOSPITAL SUCK ISSUE...

U-T Employees Restive Again -- Understandably
I don't know much about them, so I don't know if they are to be considered a legitimate source, but a few weeks ago a read the reports from a Pew Center survey. It said that 66% of Americans cite television as their main source of news, but 41 % get most of their news on the internet. In the 18-29 age group, 65% cited the internet as their main source, which was up from only 34% 3 years ago. If U-T has had thoughts of attracting new , young readers to bolster it's circulation, they are already losing that battle. As a whole only 31% of Americans use newspapers as their main source for news and information.— March 24, 2011 12:32 a.m.
The shame that San Diego smokers feel
One small correction, jsidney. Ca. law requires employees be give a 10 minute break, not 15, for each 4 hour work period or major fraction thereof, to be taken in the middle of the shift, as much as is practical, unless total hours worked s less than 31/2 hrs. Also, a lot of people don't realize that if an employer doesn't allow you to take a break at some point, you're entitled to an additional hour of pay for that work day.— March 23, 2011 9:08 a.m.

When you say that you begrudge CEOs making 8 figures, are you referring to only salary or total compensation packages??— March 22, 2011 9:47 a.m.
Are American Engineers in Short Supply?
As I said, you may have your reasons and they appear justified in your case. But to retain that hatred after 30 yrs? I admit I'm not in your position, but to carry hatred that long is something I personally have a hard time comprehending— March 17, 2011 10:43 p.m.
