I'm Afraid of Americans

I'm no war supporter, but is it fair to say that the tendency to get violent on the nation-state scale is unique to Americans? Seems to me that every society has people who object to war, people who look the other way, and people who load up their gats and roll out. Our invasion of Iraq was the first war I've lived through as an adult, and it has certainly crushed my hope for a Star-Trek-the-Next-Generation-type universal peace -- after all, if Americans in 2008 can't say no to war, with all the information and freedom at our disposal, who ever will? But long-term history suggests to me that we Americans just happen to be the current suckers for war. When we're long gone, and even while we're still around, there'll always be some country or society or tribe that periodically gets goaded into picking up the pitchforks and chasing after the "enemy" du jour.

Yo Ollie, I missed this column a few weeks ago, but just read it today, and as usual, enjoyed...the babies of America should all take a listen. And you are so right about the suckfest that is the Chronicles of Narnia...why are people so into that crap? Anyway, more importantly, hope your birthday celebration was fitting, and that you taught that panda a thing or two!

The Little One

So my earlier comment reads a lot jerkier than i intended. Didn't mean to cop the attitude. With the statistic I was just trying to point out that parenthood might not be for everybody. There are certainly folks who thrive from it, like Joaquin, and when that's the situation, everyone wins. My caveat is just that if you're not certain it's for you, or if you're certain it's not for you, the decision deserves a real good thinkin' over. lightness is spot on, too...there are loads of ways to pursue the noble goal of serving others. Babysitting for your friends with kids comes to mind.

The Little One

Hey Joaquin, before you run around telling people that having kids will make them happier, do some research...you might be surprised by what studies have found regarding parenthood and happiness. Back in the late 80s, for example, the National Survey of Families and Households tested 9,000 American adults and found that, as a group, parents reported significantly higher rates of depression versus childless adults. This was especially true of parents with young children. On the other hand, "empty nesters" whose kids were full grown reported the same levels of depression as childless adults. So here's the scientific verdict, which has been confirmed by dozens of subsequent studies: on average, having kids doesn't make people any happier, even when the kids are full grown - and while the kids are younger, parenthood is more likely to bum you out than to make you smile. Put that in your crib and rock it, daddy-o.

Wingwomen make it easy for San Diego shy guys

So if, with his wingwoman's help, a guy does meet a woman that he wants to date, does he tell the new woman that the woman he was with was an escort? That could get weird. But the cover-up could be worse than the crime. What's a nice, sensitive guy to do?

Painful Pirouette

When I was a kid (1980s) someone said that Orville's phone number was in the San Diego white pages, and that he would answer the phone if you called. So I looked, and there it was, and I called, and an Orville-sounding voice answered with, "Redenbachers." Speechless with amazement, I hung up. Several months later, I got the bright idea to call again and be more of a smart ass, but the number was no longer in the phone book. True story.
