Entertaining piece. Thanks! One suggestion is you might want to add paragraph breaks to boost read-ability. But anyway, I like the happy ending, too - glad things worked out for the best!

A Snail and a Plane at Night
Thanks for the comment, scrivenerb. I agree about the snail...its slow, seemingly unhurried crawl makes me feel just a little more at peace. Quite a different story with the plane that screams by up above!

I made it for C-Money and the Players, the last band to play the beer garden. A pesky speaker kept shorting out during the set, and because the organizers had kept repeating that the event was largely powered by wind and solar sources, lots of people attributed the speaker's power problem to the setting sun. Between kick-ass trumpet sections and up-tempo vocals, C-Money kept joking that the energy issue was caused by a section of the crowd that wasn't dancing enough. Despite the speaker issue, C-Money and the Players had the whole beer garden jamming through song after song, including a nasty and fun little R. Kelly number as well as Slightly Stoopid's No Cocaine, on which Kyle from Stoopid joined in. The OB props popped up on the microphone here and there throughout the show, and they were as heartfelt and authentic as the set crafted by the Players - a fitting finale for the inaugural OB Global Rockfest. Bring back the 'fest in 2010!

Black Cat Afternoon
Thanks gelle. The videos certainly have no real pattern or plan, other than pointing the camera at all the various visual glories of Ocean Beach. Which is an amazing 'hood. As I'm guessing you already know.

Mystery Tower
I, for one, feel better that the "24-hour tower" is gone. But I wonder what the heck were they looking at with that thing? Hmmph. In any case, nice reporting, Steve Terry. I love the slow-building tension, culminating in a sweeping and immediate resolution in the final sentence, with all of its sharply crafted directness. And the video is an enjoyable supplement.

Surf Nazi Hate Crime
I join in saluting the author's courage, shown in the face of the bully, and again in response to the suggestion that the bully get his way. At some point, someone has to stand up to that type of toxic behavior if the behavior is to stop. I do hope the police follow through on the case. And, by the way, thanks to the author for a great piece of reporting. This article is gripping from the start, and takes readers inside a real-life run-in with one of the surf hooligans we usually only hear about in vague rumors. Nicely done, both at the Jetty and on the keyboard.

Parent of Chicago Sun-Times Files for Bankruptcy
Mr. Bauder, with newspapers dying around the country, what do you think of the idea of a national press corps? Something akin to Britain's BBC News, except with a local focus, instead of the BBC News' international bent. The federal government could employ a certain number of reporters per capita in cities across the country, who would be charged with a BBC-type mission of "inform, educate, entertain." Seems like one way to restore the dwindling number of local-coverage reporters across the country, with the added benefit of creating jobs. And the money spent would be well worth it, considering the costs we'll all bear if local journalism is allowed to continue to wither, giving local politicians have that much more freedom from scrutiny. Indeed, the cost of a national press corps could be considered a maintenance payment on our democracy. Just putting it out there...

Should Call Him Khem
I have read this like six times, and it gets better each time. I still gasp in delight at parts like "deep evening cock-handling to the best of 80s production sensibilities"...which is truly delightful. Thank you. Tremendous finish, too, BTW, with the pearl of wisdom followed by the screen door creaking shut. During my first read, my view of Bas pivoted 180 degrees as I read the last two paragraphs. Maybe the old devil has it figured out after all. OK, back to my corn flakes...

A Snail and a Plane at Night
Thanks for the comment, scrivenerb. I agree about the snail...its slow, seemingly unhurried crawl makes me feel just a little more at peace. Quite a different story with the plane that screams by up above!— April 29, 2009 8:32 p.m.

Bring back the 'fest in 2010!— April 24, 2009 12:05 a.m.
Black Cat Afternoon
Thanks gelle. The videos certainly have no real pattern or plan, other than pointing the camera at all the various visual glories of Ocean Beach. Which is an amazing 'hood. As I'm guessing you already know.— April 23, 2009 11:37 p.m.
And the video is an enjoyable supplement.— April 7, 2009 10:41 p.m.
Nicely done, both at the Jetty and on the keyboard.— April 3, 2009 10:53 p.m.
Just putting it out there...— April 1, 2009 9:05 a.m.
OK, back to my corn flakes...— March 1, 2009 9:54 p.m.
