Terminator Salvation
Man, was Terminator Salvation written like crap. Several moments of intense cheesiness. Several instances where the film relies on unrealistic expository dialog to fill viewers in on what's going on. Plot holes big enough for Arnold to drive a semi through. And it's all capped off with an ending that leaves suggests the filmmakers have no remorse. On the other hand, some parts of T4 are so bad, they're enjoyable. There's the rainbow coalition of grumpy old men -- one American, one Asian, one European, one African -- who manage the resistance from under the sea. There's the fact that the evil machines come with handy USB ports, allowing resistance members to plug in equally handy override devices when need be. There's the contribution from actor/rapper Common, which is so wooden and meaningless -- watch for his unintentional laugh line "It's beautiful" -- that he was obviously inserted solely to puff up ticket sales a few extra percent by pulling in the hip-hop demographic. Admittedly, I got good laughs out of each of these moments. But T4 ain't meant to be a comedy, and the further I got from the theater, the more I felt ripped. T1 and T2 were truly amazing action flicks that blended an intriguing story with cool characters, bad-ass action, and magic special effects. T3 was an insult to fans, and T4 extends that insult. If you're like me, you'll hold out hope and see the movie despite what everyone is telling you. And you'll sulk away with a lighter wallet and nothing to show for it but frustration and Red Vines-coated teeth.

The Little and the Big
Josh, have you seen Terminator 4 yet? Wow, does it suck. Several moments of intense cheesiness. Several instances where the film relies on unrealistic expository dialog to fill viewers in on what's going on. Plot holes big enough for Arnold to drive a semi through. Yet another soul-less sequel designed to separate fans from their money. Ugh.

Laid-Off U-T Workers Told to Leave Friday, Will Be Paid until July 6
Just read the Globe article. Funny to hear Globe management talking about newspapers still trying to figure out how to make money on the Internet. Seems like newspapers have been trying to figure that out for 10 years now, and don't seem to have gotten anywhere. This got me wondering - are other countries experiencing this same phenomenon? Is the Internet killing newspapers around the world, or is it just US papers that can't seem to figure out how to survive?

None
Love the story - your joy for latrinalia is palpable. What up with San Diego being relatively barren of bathroom-wall words of wisdom? I bet you could remedy that by leaving Sharpies in public bathrooms across town.

Growing Old Gracefully?
Beauty a blessing and a curse? I couldn't disagree more. I've read this piece a couple times, and I still can't figure out what is the hard part about being attractive. Is it the burden of feeling like you have to look good to others? Seems like, all else being equal, that burden would be heavier for an unattractive person than an attractive person. So it's a bit inconsistent for someone who feels this burden to whine about being attractive, given that the burden would be worse if she weren't attractive. Is it the fact that physical beauty tends to fade over time? Maybe it is harder to have been hot and lost it than never to have been hot at all. But to me, that sounds like selfish resentment of a nice thing that eventually went away, and I tend to prefer grateful appreciation that it came around in the first place. Just my $0.02. As for the neighbors, the elder bike riders, maybe we should stop worrying about their motivations for bike riding, and start respecting how they don't let the petty judgments of others get in the way of their time on their two-wheelers. Personally, I love the fact that those two are out there on their bikes, regardless of the opinions of the whipper-snapper across the street. I'm not close to 60 myself, but when I am, I hope to hell that I won't be looking for some kind of "life of comfortable obsolescence." Now that's unattractive!

Message in the Sky
"Visitors from another planet would challenge our sense of structured reality and compel us to explore the new, and no longer abstract, concepts that exist beyond the soothing material confines of our sheltering world." Or else they'd be accused of coming here to steal our jobs and take advantage of our social programs.

Farmers' Market From Afar
Thanks, SD! You know our motto: Aleatory. By Design. Full disclosure, I had to look up 'aleatory' before coming up with that dumb joke. Anyway, you got it...more HD goodies from Ocean Beach, on the way.

Federal Defenders fights to stop courtroom shackles in San Diego
I dig that story, too. I enjoyed your storytelling. Got a wee bit steamy there on party night, didn't it. Hips on the carpet and whatnot. Cue the horny bellhop from that one Simpsons episode: Bellhop: [wolf-whistles, makes a cat noise, imitates a bed squeaking, purrs, pants, barks, howls, twiddles his lips] "Hubba hubba!" BTW, in the Over The Line tournament, there has been a women's team called Sandy Fish Tacos.

The Death Pool and Dom DeLuise
I miss Bea Arthur, too, for one simple reason: Golden Girls. In hindsight, it's kind of funny that the show appealed to me, given that, back then, I was a pre-pubescent lad whose other interests included skateboarding and fireworks. But there was something about the Golden Girls formula that was just right...Rose, the airhead; Blanche, the slut; Dorothy, the angry one; and Sophia, Dorothy's mother, who always had sassy put-downs for everybody. Damn, what a show. So RIP, Bea. In your honor: if you through a party and invited everyone you knew you would see the biggest gift would be from me and the card attached would say thank you for being a friend

Nuggets from March and April
Sure, magicsfive, feel free to use on myspace. And sorry to hear you're not in San Diego right now. If you can't get back here in the flesh, keep on checkin' OB in HD...our goal is to provide little visual tastes of Diego life!

And you'll sulk away with a lighter wallet and nothing to show for it but frustration and Red Vines-coated teeth.— May 22, 2009 6:11 p.m.
Ugh.— May 22, 2009 12:46 p.m.
Is the Internet killing newspapers around the world, or is it just US papers that can't seem to figure out how to survive?— May 21, 2009 8:46 a.m.

Love the story - your joy for latrinalia is palpable. What up with San Diego being relatively barren of bathroom-wall words of wisdom? I bet you could remedy that by leaving Sharpies in public bathrooms across town.— May 20, 2009 4:59 p.m.
I'm not close to 60 myself, but when I am, I hope to hell that I won't be looking for some kind of "life of comfortable obsolescence." Now that's unattractive!— May 20, 2009 12:58 p.m.
Message in the Sky
"Visitors from another planet would challenge our sense of structured reality and compel us to explore the new, and no longer abstract, concepts that exist beyond the soothing material confines of our sheltering world." Or else they'd be accused of coming here to steal our jobs and take advantage of our social programs.— May 19, 2009 11:03 a.m.

Thanks, SD! You know our motto: Aleatory. By Design. Full disclosure, I had to look up 'aleatory' before coming up with that dumb joke. Anyway, you got it...more HD goodies from Ocean Beach, on the way.— May 15, 2009 9:02 p.m.
Federal Defenders fights to stop courtroom shackles in San Diego
I dig that story, too. I enjoyed your storytelling. Got a wee bit steamy there on party night, didn't it. Hips on the carpet and whatnot. Cue the horny bellhop from that one Simpsons episode: Bellhop: [wolf-whistles, makes a cat noise, imitates a bed squeaking, purrs, pants, barks, howls, twiddles his lips] "Hubba hubba!" BTW, in the Over The Line tournament, there has been a women's team called Sandy Fish Tacos.— May 7, 2009 10:21 p.m.
In your honor: if you through a party and invited everyone you knew you would see the biggest gift would be from me and the card attached would say thank you for being a friend— May 6, 2009 3:27 p.m.

Sure, magicsfive, feel free to use on myspace. And sorry to hear you're not in San Diego right now. If you can't get back here in the flesh, keep on checkin' OB in HD...our goal is to provide little visual tastes of Diego life!— May 1, 2009 3:18 p.m.
