Six Minutes of Street Fair Scenes and Tunes

Thanks for the shout, SD! Not sure on the veg chili, but given that OB is a pretty forward-thinking place, and home to many a vegan, I'd guess that at least a few of the competitors fielded meatless entries. Actually, though I love the chili cook-off, I usually pass on the chili. A few years back, 2003 maybe, I skipped breakfast, feasted on chili from just about every cook in the contest, and then spent much of the afternoon making urgent visits to porta-potties and the restrooms of Newport Avenue bars...

Thanks for the shout, Pat! Glad you're liking what you're seeing. And I didn't realize you also call Ocean Beach home. Wow, our 'hood is definitely well represented here at the sdreader site. Sticking with Stocks

I don't buy the inflation-protection justification for tilting towards stocks. Stocks are not guaranteed to do well in an inflationary environment, particularly if the inflation comes not from a hot economy but from a devaluation in the dollar. If inflation is such a concern for the City fund, why not go for TIPS, Treasury Inflation Protected Securities? Payouts for TIPS go up directly with the Consumer Price Index, so it seems like TIPS would be a better match for the inflation-indexed benefits the fund owes retirees. Of course, TIPS don't offer the theoretical "risk premium" that is generally incorporated into projections of returns for stocks. So the big allocation to stocks probably allows the City to forecast long-term fund returns of, say, inflation plus 5%. TIPS-type returns would be closer to inflation plus 2%. So maybe one reason for betting big on stocks is stocks help the fund project larger long-term returns - and therefore the fund seems less cash-strapped in the short term.

MamaBird and BabyBird

Thanks for the shout, JulieParrots. Unfortunately, I can't vouch for the well-being of BabyBird, who I didn't see in the area today. The area is home to a posse of cats, most of whom fancy themselves hunters. So the perils of flightlessness would be tough enough for a full-grown bird, and could be overwhelming for little BabyBird. But who knows? With a little luck, perhaps BabyBird will manage to dodge trouble on the ground until those wings can fly to safety.

Tijuana Snapshot

Damn, this is cool. Flows like a bad dream, and really captures the seamy, dangerous underbelly of a tough Tijuana. Not sure if the violence is fiction or non. And I don't know if the general air of lawlessness is exaggerated (some say TJ is fine, some say TJ is deadly). But this writing certainly transports the reader to a dark and sinister place.

Smuggled by Surfboard

These smuggling stories are amusing, in a sad way, but more importantly, they help highlight the ridiculousness of marijuana prohibition. What are we doing banning weed? Why waste our taxpayer dollars and law enforcement resources? Why transfer the billions spent by users into the hands of criminals? I suppose prohibitionists are concerned for their fellow citizens, which I admire. But concern doesn't change these facts: millions of Americans want to smoke weed, and trying to stand in their way does more harm than good.

Coming Soon to a Theatre Near You

Hey, if they put something on a movie screen and charge $10 to see it, criticism is fair game. You don't have to be a moviemaker yourself to recognize when a movie sucks. As so many of them do. On the trailer tip, I always wonder who puts them together, and whether it kills the screenwriter or the director when the trailer gives up key parts of the plot. Like when the Terminator Salvation trailer gives up an important twist involving Sam Worthington's character - and then much of the tension in the first 1/3 of the movie is dependent on viewers not knowing about the twist. It's like the marketing team operates independently of the creative team, and the viewer suffers. If I'm really excited about a new movie, I try to avoid its trailers, just because they tend to give away so much. Actually, the same is true of most reviews...almost inevitably, reviews give too much info, and take away from the purity of the first viewing. For example, I had heard that In Bruges was good, but I didn't hear anything else about it. So when I rented it the other night, I had no idea what to expect...and I was blown away by the movie's humor and its twists and turns. Then, after seeing it, I went online and read some reviews...and all of the reviews, in the part where they summarize the plot, gave away one of the movie's early twists. Sheesh.
