Strolling Octoberfest with Lila
I've sipped Millers at Oktoberfest in Milwaukee one time, with my Uncle Ben. Good fun and lots of good people, just like Wisconsin in general. I think that, like San Diego, Wisconsin is also a paradise...just of a different sort. Can't resist a Simpson's aside: "There's no such thing as Scotchtoberfest." "There's not?! Ya used me, Skinner! Up, Up and Away...in a silver balloon
Another pop culture link is the episode of The Simpsons in which the town rallies when Bart was thought to be stuck at the bottom of a well, when in reality Bart was at home, laughing safely. Also, the Bruce Willis flick 12 Monkeys had a bit in which a supposed well boy turned out to be hiding in a barn.

The Informant!
I agree, the score felt a bit out of place, just like the use of 60s-ish font in a movie set in the early 90s, though the music did kind of match the silly and speedy off-topic narration from Matt Damon's character. As for that narration, it occasionally made me laugh, but I think it was more intended to indicate the mania in Whitacre, an intelligent guy whose mind moved quickly, but in way too many directions. And Damon's hair and moustache were definitely goofy looking...Kids in the Hall is a great call. Believe it or not, that's how Whitacre actually looked. The Informant!
Not quite funny enough to be a comedy, not quite serious enough to be a drama, this Matt Damon showcase is still quite engaging. Damon plays real-life corporate mole Mark Whitacre with manic abandon, rarely sitting still on-camera and delivering incessant narration, usually off-topic, from off-camera. He's fun to watch as he entangles himself, his wife, his fellow food company executives, and a cadre of FBI agents in a web of deceit. And director Steven Soderbergh, despite a couple confusing missteps - such as the 60s-era lava-lamp font of the movie's subtitles, and a sequence in which the tables are turned on Whitacre somewhat unclearly - keeps things moving briskly and gelling neatly. Importantly, viewers who think Matt Damon's best work has been in Rounders or The Bourne Supremacy might not appreciate The Informant's more cerebral subject matter and character-driven touches. "Did you see my stipple portrait?" Mark Whitacre chirps proudly when he shows up in the Wall Street Journal. If you have no idea what he's talking about, you might not dig this movie.

Surrogates
This somewhat enjoyable hour-and-a-half feels like mindless summer action fare, even with its early-autumn release. The plot unfolds predictably, and only the surface of its deep pool of philosophical potential is explored. In addition, Bruce Willis is robotic, both as a robot cop and as Tom Greer, the human who controls the robot cop via home computer. Nonetheless, Surrogates is largely redeemed by its compelling visuals - mainly because its storyline necessitates actors and actresses with perfect skin, perfect bodies, and perfect facial symmetry. Rosamund Pike, for example, is ravishing as the crisply featured robot version of Greer's wife. Likewise, Boris Kodjoe brings an angry-GQ-model flair as the robot controlled by Greer's boss. Happily, scant screen time is dedicated to characters who represent actual humans. Among them, a dreadlocked Ving Rhames seems an odd casting choice as the leader of the anti-surrogate revolution, but pulls it off well enough. James Cromwell is less successful as the jilted inventor of the machines; as usual, his grumpy-old-man-with-gravitas performance feels like it belongs in a community playhouse.

Strolling Octoberfest with Lila
I've sipped Millers at Oktoberfest in Milwaukee one time, with my Uncle Ben. Good fun and lots of good people, just like Wisconsin in general. Up, Up and Away...in a silver balloon
Another pop culture link is the episode of The Simpsons in which the town rallies when Bart was thought to be stuck at the bottom of a well, when in reality Bart was at home, laughing safely. Also, the Bruce Willis flick 12 Monkeys had a bit in which a supposed well boy turned out to be hiding in a barn.— October 15, 2009 9:39 p.m.

The Informant!
I agree, the score felt a bit out of place, just like the use of 60s-ish font in a movie set in the early 90s, though the music did kind of match the silly and speedy off-topic narration from Matt Damon's character. As for that narration, it occasionally made me laugh, but I think it was more intended to indicate the mania in Whitacre, an intelligent guy whose mind moved quickly, but in way too many directions. And Damon's hair and moustache were definitely goofy looking...Kids in the Hall is a great call. Believe it or not, that's how Whitacre actually looked. The Informant!
Not quite funny enough to be a comedy, not quite serious enough to be a drama, this Matt Damon showcase is still quite engaging. Damon plays real-life corporate mole Mark Whitacre with manic abandon, rarely sitting still on-camera and delivering incessant narration, usually off-topic, from off-camera. He's fun to watch as he entangles himself, his wife, his fellow food company executives, and a cadre of FBI agents in a web of deceit. And director Steven Soderbergh, despite a couple confusing missteps - such as the 60s-era lava-lamp font of the movie's subtitles, and a sequence in which the tables are turned on Whitacre somewhat unclearly - keeps things moving briskly and gelling neatly. Importantly, viewers who think Matt Damon's best work has been in Rounders or The Bourne Supremacy might not appreciate The Informant's more cerebral subject matter and character-driven touches. "Did you see my stipple portrait?" Mark Whitacre chirps proudly when he shows up in the Wall Street Journal. If you have no idea what he's talking about, you might not dig this movie.— September 27, 2009 9:59 p.m.
Surrogates
This somewhat enjoyable hour-and-a-half feels like mindless summer action fare, even with its early-autumn release. The plot unfolds predictably, and only the surface of its deep pool of philosophical potential is explored. In addition, Bruce Willis is robotic, both as a robot cop and as Tom Greer, the human who controls the robot cop via home computer. Nonetheless, Surrogates is largely redeemed by its compelling visuals - mainly because its storyline necessitates actors and actresses with perfect skin, perfect bodies, and perfect facial symmetry. Rosamund Pike, for example, is ravishing as the crisply featured robot version of Greer's wife. Likewise, Boris Kodjoe brings an angry-GQ-model flair as the robot controlled by Greer's boss. Happily, scant screen time is dedicated to characters who represent actual humans. Among them, a dreadlocked Ving Rhames seems an odd casting choice as the leader of the anti-surrogate revolution, but pulls it off well enough. James Cromwell is less successful as the jilted inventor of the machines; as usual, his grumpy-old-man-with-gravitas performance feels like it belongs in a community playhouse.— September 27, 2009 8:08 p.m.
