Crest Café
After a late movie this week a bunch of us met at the Crest Cafe in Hillcrest for a bite to eat. I personally hadn't been there in quite a few years. I am glad we went. Loved the atmosphere and the people. Our waiter was quite incredible, he didn't use a pencil for taking our orders (5 of us) an amazing memory. I ordered hot tea from a quite extensive tea menu and I loved it. Comes in a totally different tea pot for each person. Each of us ordered something different and I asked each person in our group how there food was and each was quite pleased. I know I was amazed at a shrimp salad a friend got, one got a chicken pot pie and very pleased, the next friend got a super hamburger that was quite large with all the dressings to add on. I got a Turkey sandwich and it was cut in half, I could only eat half since I was so filled with turkey, totally original and very good...took the rest home for lunch the next day. I will be going back. Oh, they were open until midnight, we left at 11:45pm.— October 23, 2008 11:33 p.m.
The Secret Life of Bees
The Performances in The Secret Life of Bees was done quite well. Queen Latifah enters the movie about a quarter of the way in, so it's a nice surprise,Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, and Sophie Okonedo did incredible jobs. I really like the acting in this movie by all concerned, set back in 1967. However the storyline just wasn't there. Frankly I was expecting to learn about the Secret Life of Bees, it really never got there, so what's that? I was just trying to understand what the Secret Life of Bees had to do with this movie? It never got there. Otherwise the storyline without the bees was done quite well. I say go see it, I think you'll like it. Two Stars on this one folks.— October 16, 2008 11:50 a.m.
Rudford's
From my ratings you can see Rudford's is not high on my list. The daily crown is mixed, but mostly the older, yet friendly group. Nice waiters and waitresses, get the $2 off coupon in the Reader before you go. Large selection of items on menu, including full breakfast menu. I have been going to Rudford's for a long time. But haven't been in about a month. It has been at the same location for ever, just one block west of 30th on El Cajon Blvd. My main issue is the food, it just doesn't pop for me. I wouldn't say greasy spoon but rather bland in my opinion. There sandwiches are good, and should satisify. Same goes for their Entrees. They also have a Taco Salad that is more than most can eat, but again doesn't go all the way for me. I think I would rather pay a little more at another restaurant where I really like the food than get a good deal at Rudfords. I would say worth one visit just to see if you like it. It does have an atmosphere, you never know who will pop in next.— October 3, 2008 11:16 a.m.
Miracle at St. Anna
Miracle at St. Anna, a must see to say the least. A lot of violence and some nude scenes. Spike Lee did it this time in his directing. So convincing, I thought it was and adaptation from a real story but in fact it is from a novel. I think everyone in the theater agreed on this one. Academy Award material, I can tell you now Spike Lee will get a nomination for Best Director. Dynamic to say the least. Lasts around 2 1/2 hours, but a really good movie is never long enough, it didn't seem that long at all. Four black men in WWII in a Negro platoon. Touching, Riviting, Violent, Moving... You can's take your eyes away. Derek Luke aka Antwone Fisher, just might also get a Best Actor nomination also. This movie shows the realities of World War II, with scenes that really seemed real. Highly recommended for all. Incredible sound and music. Storyline is Solid. Four+ Stars on this one.— September 24, 2008 10:35 p.m.
Towelhead
Towelhead is for the stocker or child molester. An interesting watch to say the least. I know many women wanted to leave in the middle of the movie, because of the content. A 13 year old played by Summer Bishil who is actually 20. She did a very convencing job of it and I commend her for great acting. Trying to discover her sexuality at 13 is frankly done quite well and in fact covers most all bases except a lesbian view. So much went on in this movie, there was always something new happening, that shocked the you know what out of a lot of viewers. Many laughs throughout this movie proved to be intertaining to say the least. The younger crowd should find this Independent Film quite interesting and possibly prove to be popular. I give it 2 1/2 stars. You know you want to see it.— September 24, 2008 10:17 p.m.
Choke
Choke is your typical "Love Story", well not really, but in the end (last scene) it is. Sam Rockwell and Anjelica Huston do great jobs as usual, Huston is always awesome. Frankly I was expecting something more from this one. If you don't know what the theme of this movie is then ad "ing" on to the title and add two words, then you will have it. Too corny I'd say, some laughs and some moments I almost dosed off. Overall so-so. I give this one 1-Star. That's about it folks.— September 24, 2008 10:04 p.m.
In Bulk
Nights in Rodanthe was an interesting movie to say the least, touching at times, with an interesting storyline but not strong. What caught most people was the ending. But to me it was the same old thing, without going into details or specifics. To me it was obvious what was going to happen. I would prefer a new twist instead of, what I thought was going to happen, did. Didn't bring tears to these eyes. You be the judge. Richard Gere and Diane Lane did a good job with a few scenes that didn't make any sense. I pretty much agree with Duncan on this one. What really got me was the fact that in the filled theater most all had tears flowing in the end, which amazed me.— September 24, 2008 9:54 p.m.
Traitor
Caught a screening of Traitor and if you want to know if the FBI is on top of terrorism you should go see this movie, it might fool you. Don Cheadle does a really good job, Guy Pearce is the supporting actor in this movie. Rated PG-13 for intense violence. I think this was a worth it movie and give it 2 1/2 stars.— September 18, 2008 10:25 p.m.
Lakeview Terrace
Lakeview Terrace is an action packed movie with Samuel L. Jackson who has shown his ability in the past and doesn't dissapoint in this one either. Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington, somewhat newer actors also do a good job of it. If you are looking for a cop movie with a twist and some crazy stuff this should do it. Although rated PG-13, for intense thematic material, violence, sexuality, language and some drug reference, you might want to restrict the younger ones on this one. 3 Stars from me on this one. Are some cops really like that? I hope not!— September 18, 2008 10:15 p.m.
Ghost Town
Ghost Town is really a fun movie, very well done. Ricky Gervais, Greg Kinnear, and Tea Leoni do a wonderful job. Not your box office Big Hit. But worth the visit to your movie theater. 3 Stars on this one folks. What happens when you die, even for a little while? Go and find out....— September 18, 2008 10:06 p.m.
