By 2010 Marine Life Protection Act will close 20 percent of coast to fishing
I am a member of the South Coast Regional Stakeholders Group (RSG) and I think it is important to point out that there is a significant representation of commercial and recreational fishing interests on the RSG. Everyone is sitting at the table together to come up with a solution that will benefit the long term health of the ocean. By addressing this issue now, we are making an investment in the future and will hopefully create a marine environment where our kids will be able to fish, surf, dive, and appreciate the natural beauty of intact ecosystems. Creating marine protected areas gives us insurance against the uncertainties inherent in traditional fisheries management and also against larger scale impacts like climate change. I believe that no matter what side of the table you sit on, we all want the same thing: a legacy of healthy oceans and abundant fish populations. We can all agree on that.— January 7, 2009 5:49 p.m.
