Five Oceanside Police Have DUIs?
"Cops are not hired on merit-and as I have said before-if they hired 100% on merit based testing the entire make up of all major metro PD's would be 100% different than they are today....and it would be light years better." I can't say about Los Angeles or San Diego, but I've had a friend I've known for about ten years now. When I got to know her, she lived on the East Coast, worked in an office. Very smart gal, bought her own home when she was still in her mid-twenties. Type of gal I'd want my daughters to become. Eventually, she met a guy that lives in a large Northern State in a modest-sized city. They fell in love and married and they moved there. This was roughly five years ago. She entered the police academy there and graduated and became a cop. A few months ago, she became a detective. Her achievements are due to her hard work and PLACING 1st ON HER EXAMS, nothing else. While I have no idea about not being hired on merit in San Diego or Los Angeles, I know for a fact that it works by testing and passing an exam - regardless of other officer's recommendations - in other cities. SP, if you know of any such promotions where testing was ignored, by all means, spell it out here or email it to Don. That's a story that needs to be told. It is certainly possible to be promoted without gaining the highest score, based on other events (job-based merits), but if the test score isn't high, any job-based merits won't work.

Re #110: Mexico plays American football at the University level, they have several teams. Half of those teams are called "Rams". Apparently, it's a popular logo style.

San Diego women who have converted to Islam
"I am still left questioning its value in today's world." I think it has negative value in parts of the world where the vast majority do not wear such clothing. And I certainly don't think it's unfair to consider that in parts of the world where the vast majority wear such clothing that this is mandated by forces wishing to control society.

Oh, and another tidbit that most people don't know about: Mexico has nuclear power. There is a plant in Veracruz with two reactors, the first beginning operations in 1990. Frank Zappa once said, "You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline - it helps if you have some kind of football team, or some nuclear weapons, but in the very least you need a beer." Well, Mexico has good beer, and an airline, and football teams. They could probably have some nuclear weapons if they wanted them, but I don't think they want to get that involved. A nuclear power plant is close enough.

@ #107: Things here are obviously different. For one, as I mentioned, electricity is Nationalized. But beyond that, it's different. In the U.S. in most locations, for example, 220V is piped into the main breaker and is split at that breaker into 2 poles of 110V each split. In Mexico, they bring in 110V off of the line. Residents get 1 pole at 110V, and if they want 220V, the government puts you on a waiting list and charges you a more-than-modest fee in order to run it into your box.

San Diego women who have converted to Islam
Muppy (and really, anyone), another interesting read concerning the hijab and Muslim tradition in general and what is perceived as Western culture's attempt to ban it, can be uncovered in the Turkish revolution. It was one of the steps that Mustafa Atatürk took in order to attempt to seperate a system of Islamic judiciary rule in order to promote a secular Turkey. Obviously, he encountered much difficulty with this attempt, as Muslim chieftains enjoyed great autonomy and influence and wealth and, well, many wives under the Caliphate. Atatürk eventually managed to abolish the Caliphate in Turkey but the sons and grandsons of the chieftains and their tribal influences in Turkey remain to this day.

By the way, concerning solar energy in Mexico, many in the areas where gringo retirement is popular have purchased land and built homes and use solar. The electric company, which is owned by the government, will not pay for what is produced as excess. Will that ever change? Who knows...

American Dies Before Tijuana Judge
"If he rammed a mirror why is his head wound on the back of his head?" Excellent question. "Obviously someone hit him from behind or slammed him into the mirror!" Could be, certainly not "obviously". He could've been cut in the back of the head by shattered glass. Here's another scenario, completely my opinion. Guy goes to Tijuana, gets drunk as hell. Too drunk, in fact, to walk even a few blocks to some strip club, so he hails a cab. The cab drives him there, and he leaves the taxi, refusing to pay, and starts raising hell in the club. The bouncer asks him to leave and he refuses and a scuffle ensues when they try to remove him and his head hits a mirror in the process. Meanwhile, the cops are called. They arrive, and that cab driver is still out there waiting, because he hasn't been paid. Meanwhile the drunk guy now has a wound. Obviously the club manager says they're innocent. Meanwhile, Red Cross is called to attend to the guy, who refuses treatment. So then, the cops have to take this guy and see if they should hold him because he's insanely drunk, owes a cab driver a fare, and then there's the question about the broken mirror. And, he fights the cops, so they have no choice but to hog-tie him. He goes before the judge and procedes to go stupid, and he dies from whatever he dies from. Aside from the guy dropping dead, I've seen this happen over and over and over...

Five Oceanside Police Have DUIs?
"Cops are not hired on merit-and as I have said before-if they hired 100% on merit based testing the entire make up of all major metro PD's would be 100% different than they are today....and it would be light years better." I can't say about Los Angeles or San Diego, but I've had a friend I've known for about ten years now. When I got to know her, she lived on the East Coast, worked in an office. Very smart gal, bought her own home when she was still in her mid-twenties. Type of gal I'd want my daughters to become. Eventually, she met a guy that lives in a large Northern State in a modest-sized city. They fell in love and married and they moved there. This was roughly five years ago. She entered the police academy there and graduated and became a cop. A few months ago, she became a detective. Her achievements are due to her hard work and PLACING 1st ON HER EXAMS, nothing else. While I have no idea about not being hired on merit in San Diego or Los Angeles, I know for a fact that it works by testing and passing an exam - regardless of other officer's recommendations - in other cities. SP, if you know of any such promotions where testing was ignored, by all means, spell it out here or email it to Don. That's a story that needs to be told. It is certainly possible to be promoted without gaining the highest score, based on other events (job-based merits), but if the test score isn't high, any job-based merits won't work.— September 15, 2010 12:08 a.m.

"I am still left questioning its value in today's world." I think it has negative value in parts of the world where the vast majority do not wear such clothing. And I certainly don't think it's unfair to consider that in parts of the world where the vast majority wear such clothing that this is mandated by forces wishing to control society.— September 13, 2010 2:23 p.m.

Oh, and another tidbit that most people don't know about: Mexico has nuclear power. There is a plant in Veracruz with two reactors, the first beginning operations in 1990. Frank Zappa once said, "You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline - it helps if you have some kind of football team, or some nuclear weapons, but in the very least you need a beer." Well, Mexico has good beer, and an airline, and football teams. They could probably have some nuclear weapons if they wanted them, but I don't think they want to get that involved. @ #107: Things here are obviously different. For one, as I mentioned, electricity is Nationalized. But beyond that, it's different. In the U.S. in most locations, for example, 220V is piped into the main breaker and is split at that breaker into 2 poles of 110V each split. In Mexico, they bring in 110V off of the line. Residents get 1 pole at 110V, and if they want 220V, the government puts you on a waiting list and charges you a more-than-modest fee in order to run it into your box.— September 13, 2010 4:31 a.m.

Muppy (and really, anyone), another interesting read concerning the hijab and Muslim tradition in general and what is perceived as Western culture's attempt to ban it, can be uncovered in the Turkish revolution. It was one of the steps that Mustafa Atatürk took in order to attempt to seperate a system of Islamic judiciary rule in order to promote a secular Turkey. Obviously, he encountered much difficulty with this attempt, as Muslim chieftains enjoyed great autonomy and influence and wealth and, well, many wives under the Caliphate. Atatürk eventually managed to abolish the Caliphate in Turkey but the sons and grandsons of the chieftains and their tribal influences in Turkey remain to this day.— September 13, 2010 4:15 a.m.

By the way, concerning solar energy in Mexico, many in the areas where gringo retirement is popular have purchased land and built homes and use solar. The electric company, which is owned by the government, will not pay for what is produced as excess. Will that ever change? Who knows...— September 12, 2010 10:47 p.m.
American Dies Before Tijuana Judge
"If he rammed a mirror why is his head wound on the back of his head?" Excellent question. "Obviously someone hit him from behind or slammed him into the mirror!" Could be, certainly not "obviously". He could've been cut in the back of the head by shattered glass. Here's another scenario, completely my opinion. Guy goes to Tijuana, gets drunk as hell. Too drunk, in fact, to walk even a few blocks to some strip club, so he hails a cab. The cab drives him there, and he leaves the taxi, refusing to pay, and starts raising hell in the club. The bouncer asks him to leave and he refuses and a scuffle ensues when they try to remove him and his head hits a mirror in the process. Meanwhile, the cops are called. They arrive, and that cab driver is still out there waiting, because he hasn't been paid. Meanwhile the drunk guy now has a wound. Obviously the club manager says they're innocent. Meanwhile, Red Cross is called to attend to the guy, who refuses treatment. So then, the cops have to take this guy and see if they should hold him because he's insanely drunk, owes a cab driver a fare, and then there's the question about the broken mirror. And, he fights the cops, so they have no choice but to hog-tie him. He goes before the judge and procedes to go stupid, and he dies from whatever he dies from. Aside from the guy dropping dead, I've seen this happen over and over and over...— September 12, 2010 7:32 p.m.
