Norman Mailer Could Make a Phone Book Fascinating
Re #5: Choppy as in disconnected from their true relationship as you represented it. Ideologically convenient as in, a better example of a diametric rival would've been Gore Vidal, but Vidal's ideology is represented in a more complex manner. And the fringe "cultural conservatives" of that time more closely resembled the neo-conservatives of today. I would venture to guess that conservatism has become precisely the thing that Buckley did not want. Again, that's a guess. So far as Buckley himself, I agree with your opinion of him, and would likely stretch that further. As much as the masses wish to believe that he was so conservative as to completely represent that movement, he was very willing to absorb ideas from liberals and even defend such ideas when he thought it appropriate. I know that his son, Christopher, was working on a biography of his mother and father, but I have no idea if it is published quite yet (I live outside of the U.S.). I imagine that Chris will certainly reflect this and possibly include several stories in demonstration.

Norman Mailer Could Make a Phone Book Fascinating
Re #2: Regarding Buckley, your account is somewhat choppy and ideologically convenient. Buckley did publicly regret the article he wrote for Esquire. Some time after Smith was released, Smith attacked a woman at knife-point, actually stabbing her in the side (in San Diego, no less). Afterward, Smith contacted Buckley and Buckley promptly notified the F.B.I. and Smith was then captured. And if you'd like to know how Buckley felt about Mailer:

Regarding Mailer, I read him when I was quite young and didn't care for him. I might revisit some of his later novels, perhaps my tastes have changed.

The Pill for Men, Human Cannonball
"No reason to stop sperm production just because a man’s impregnated someone. I mean, where would the rapper community be if that were the situation?" I'm still not getting how that's racist. In other words, one could switch the words, 'rapper community' with any number of other words and make it work: National Basketball Association National Football League Mormon Church Porn Industry State of Kentucky Really, there are a number examples. The majority of rap music, by the way, is purchased by people who are not African American. Some of the greatest rappers are black. So what? Some of the greatest jazz musicians of all time are also black. It doesn't mean that any reference to jazz is also a reference to African Americans, that's faulty logic.

Public Funding
Re #12: Yes, I notice this amazing coincidence as well. The first occurence was on a weblog entry, apparently over a dozen or more people were inspired to sign up here, make one (and only one) comment raving about how brilliant the blog entry was (oddly enough the first and only blog entry). Since then, I've become accustomed to it in some story comments as well. It seems that both candidates have some wonderful imaginary supporters represented here in this campaign. Perhaps it's more of a statement for the effectiveness of Potter in that what he writes is taken quite seriously by both candidates and/or their supporters.

Carlsbad City Council Accused of Fascism
I love these heart-warming, feel-good stories about progress and community improvement by way of direct citizen participation in the political process of city and local government. Makes me proud to have been born an American.

Dodd-Frank Gives SEC Exemption from Providing Documents
Again, I offer that any attempt by the government to regulate the market simply connects the government to the market. Abolish the Federal Reserve, and completely cut government ties to the market.

They Shoot Engineers, Don't They?
I'd have walked out too, that offer of "out-placement" was a slap in the face. My last job in engineering was over eight years ago, laid off for the Nth time. I'm never going back to that. Even the best engineers are so easily marginalized, they'll keep ineffective sales staff and lay off good engineers. Ridiculous. Next thing I design and build is going to be my own house. Good luck, Norm Looper, I hope you are wildly successful in your next endeavor.

San Diego women who have converted to Islam
So that our terms are straight, clothing-wise: Hijab - A term generally used to describe a Muslim's modest attire. Hijab is specifically used to describe the portion of dress for women that covers the head, and the face if applicable. Chador - A cloak for women worn from head to toe that is open in front. Popular in Iran. Abaya - Like a chador, only closed in front and is often worn with a type of face veil. Niqab - A face veil for women with a slit to expose only the eyes. The slit may optionally be closed. Burqa - A face veil like the niqab but does not expose any part of the face. Mesh is in the eye area to permit vision. Thobe - A robe, usually white, for men. Appears taylored from the neck down the sleeves and is loose to the ankles. Ghutra - A head scarf for men, it is usually white and sometimes black & white or red & white checkered, generally tied on with a black rope band. Bisht - A dress robe for men which is worn over the thobe, which is used by dignitaries.

Seabiscuit
This film failed. It should have won a Razzy for worst adaptaion of a book into a screenplay. Of course, Laura Hillenbrand's book was also slightly flawed, but she tried a lot harder than did this film. The Tijuana aspect of this story - which was a thousand times larger than the film cared to demonstrate - was lost in attempts at stoic footage of trainer and jockey and owner, none of which have nearly as much to do with the horse as most people think. If you don't believe me, watch Zenyatta (same running style, same showmanship) next time she races, and you'll see that it's all about her. To her credit, Hillenbrand got a lot of things right about the history of Agua Caliente, and for that alone I admire her efforts. Unfortunately, the film didn't catch them. The direction does nothing to focus on the horse and everything to focus away from it. Bridges is Bridges, playing a character that isn't really a character. In this, he could've been a cardboard cut-out. Most owners are far more vocal, and far more commandeering concerning their horses. Chris Cooper, well, there is only so much one can do portraying a hermit trainer. Stevens was good, I was surprised at how well he handled what was expected of him by expecting nothing. Should he want it, perhaps a script with better writing and direction with a truer purpose concerning the game of thoroughbred horse racing awaits somewhere beyond all of this. So long as it's not another film just like this one.

I imagine that Chris will certainly reflect this and possibly include several stories in demonstration.— September 18, 2010 2:42 a.m.
And if you'd like to know how Buckley felt about Mailer: http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/222822/nor… Regarding Mailer, I read him when I was quite young and didn't care for him. I might revisit some of his later novels, perhaps my tastes have changed.— September 17, 2010 4 p.m.
It doesn't mean that any reference to jazz is also a reference to African Americans, that's faulty logic.— September 17, 2010 2:55 p.m.

Perhaps it's more of a statement for the effectiveness of Potter in that what he writes is taken quite seriously by both candidates and/or their supporters.— September 17, 2010 12:24 a.m.
Carlsbad City Council Accused of Fascism
I love these heart-warming, feel-good stories about progress and community improvement by way of direct citizen participation in the political process of city and local government. Makes me proud to have been born an American.— September 16, 2010 6:32 p.m.
Dodd-Frank Gives SEC Exemption from Providing Documents
Again, I offer that any attempt by the government to regulate the market simply connects the government to the market. Abolish the Federal Reserve, and completely cut government ties to the market.— September 16, 2010 4:56 p.m.
Good luck, Norm Looper, I hope you are wildly successful in your next endeavor.— September 15, 2010 8:54 p.m.

Bisht - A dress robe for men which is worn over the thobe, which is used by dignitaries.— September 15, 2010 4:22 p.m.
So long as it's not another film just like this one.— September 15, 2010 4:30 a.m.
