Re #17: General Dynamics is now in the business of acquiring small companies. Besides NASSCO, General Dynamics acquired Tadpole in Carlsbad and Axsys Technologies which has a division in Otay. There could be others I'm not aware of since I'm no longer in that sector.

Escondido: Do Your Homework on the Portland Beavers
Re #30: Qualcomm was not a good venue to watch a baseball game unless one could afford expensive seats. I went to many games there. The concessions were high, as they are at all MLB stadiums. Petco is an much better baseball stadium, there are no bad seats there. Ticket pricing is reasonable, concessions are expensive as they are at all MLB stadiums. Petco may have been a sham in so far as how taxpayers were stuck with the bill, but it is an excellent baseball venue, and since it is built and history cannot be changed, I think it is something that San Diego can be very proud of. If you look around all MLB venues I think that you'll find that Petco is a bargain for fans, in comparison. They are not selling out because the economy sucks, plain and simple (one reason I have not attended a game this season is that I simply cannot afford it at almost any price). They are fielding an excellent team and ownership has already shown that it will do what it can to compete. I hope this continues.

Tourism Up Moderately
The problem with aerospace and defense is that for at least half of the workforce, and maybe more, it is temporary employment. Government contracts come and go, and the Prime contractors - in order to compete - change the rules often. The last aerospace job I held, we had lots of Boeing work. After a few successful years for both our company and theirs, Boeing decided that rather than to have us bid on jobs, they would tell us what price we would be paid. Other companies were willing to take a loss in order to get the work. Game over. General Atomics has enjoyed a great run being the largest supplier of unmanned drones, but that time will also come to an end. Then, in order to compete, they will move their operations to a location that costs much less, just like the other aerospace companies have done.

I think that Escondido could manage to put around 5,000 in the stands on average, so it isn't really a question of attendance. Five thousand per game is not horrible. The problem is in the city spending 50 million on something it doesn't need. Here's an idea: Schedule the AAA team to play home games when the Padres are on the road, and let them play at Petco.

What's the one thing you run out of that sends you immediately to the grocery store?
Tequila and Fresca. The supermarkets sell tequila on the cheap, and well, Fresca is the perfect chaser. Sometimes I even buy groceries there ;)

Non-speculative in terms of not awaiting FDA approval, or not relying on military contracts. That sort of manufacturing is speculative. While manufacturing in general is no sure thing, there are sectors in manufacturing that are much more solid.

This is another chunk of proof that Americans are saving again. As Don noted, bad for the short-term, good for the long-term. Bad for San Diego? Perhaps. However, if the tourism industry declines, then isn't that healthy for the long-term? Creative destruction occurs when some sectors dry up, which opens up new and often more lucrative opportunities. It would be nice to see non-speculative manufacturing return to San Diego in some form.

Arellano Félix cartel’s reputation credited to Ramón’s sadistic flair
Chad, It's a very difficult thing to keep on top of. There is no shortage of newspapers in Mexico; unlike in the U.S., they seem to be thriving here. The problem is that you track these stories all over the place, but there's rarely any follow-up. You'll read about, say, a gun battle that leaves a certain number dead and even though the press won't publish the note that was left behind (mostly because the authorities wont release the content), the press might even speculate on which factions were battling. But there's never any follow-up, except when they capture a high-profile cartel member. While the press is busy with that person, there is a power grab going on and no one pays attention to it. Sidenote: Small amounts of drugs have already been decriminalized in Mexico. So far as the solutions, there is one glaring aspect that is mostly missed by anyone writing on drug smuggling in Mexico: Drugs are being smuggled into the U.S. Seems to me that the big ol' elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about is that the U.S. fails to stop people from smuggling drugs into the U.S. This means one of two things: Either the possibility exists for terrorists to smuggle nuclear bombs into the U.S. because the U.S. cannot control the situation, or the U.S. is allowing over twenty billion dollars each year of drugs to be smuggled in because - for whatever reason one wishes to consider - they simply permit it. That's what scares me, as an expat. For the record (hopefully qualifying that my opinion isn't based on ideology), I believe that all drugs should be legalized. That would certainly solve this particular problem. And to balance out any perceived criticisms, your research was excellent and presented very well.

Arellano Félix cartel’s reputation credited to Ramón’s sadistic flair
Oh man, I don't even know where to begin picking this apart. Chad, you've missed what I think are about four or five angles on this that would've been much more engaging. For example, you open with some statement about the "Tijuana cartel". There isn't one. In many examples where one wants to discover the source of something illicit, where the cause is otherwise unknown, they say one must "follow the money". While that might be true even in this case, a better way to find where there is no real control by any one source when it comes to smuggling in Mexico, is to follow the body count. Over twenty billion dollars worth of drugs per year (probably much more, I'm quoting the U.S. source here) cross the border. Where control of that is taken away, a vacuum develops immediately. Where no cartel is present, the vacuum is fought over by smaller factions. I have no idea if you read Spanish, but I recommend looking into violence in Reynosa, Juarez, and Monterrey. These are locations that have historically been controlled by one cartel - like Tijuana once was - and are now involved in turf wars. The idea that the Sinaloa cartel has a strong hold on anything is ridiculous. If it did, then Los Zetas would still be working for them. If it did, Mexico would not be seeing these turf battles.

Tourism Up Moderately
Re #17: General Dynamics is now in the business of acquiring small companies. Besides NASSCO, General Dynamics acquired Tadpole in Carlsbad and Axsys Technologies which has a division in Otay. There could be others I'm not aware of since I'm no longer in that sector.— September 26, 2010 5:50 p.m.
Escondido: Do Your Homework on the Portland Beavers
Re #30: Qualcomm was not a good venue to watch a baseball game unless one could afford expensive seats. I went to many games there. The concessions were high, as they are at all MLB stadiums. Petco is an much better baseball stadium, there are no bad seats there. Ticket pricing is reasonable, concessions are expensive as they are at all MLB stadiums. Petco may have been a sham in so far as how taxpayers were stuck with the bill, but it is an excellent baseball venue, and since it is built and history cannot be changed, I think it is something that San Diego can be very proud of. If you look around all MLB venues I think that you'll find that Petco is a bargain for fans, in comparison. They are not selling out because the economy sucks, plain and simple (one reason I have not attended a game this season is that I simply cannot afford it at almost any price). They are fielding an excellent team and ownership has already shown that it will do what it can to compete. I hope this continues.— September 25, 2010 8:46 p.m.
Tourism Up Moderately
The problem with aerospace and defense is that for at least half of the workforce, and maybe more, it is temporary employment. Government contracts come and go, and the Prime contractors - in order to compete - change the rules often. The last aerospace job I held, we had lots of Boeing work. After a few successful years for both our company and theirs, Boeing decided that rather than to have us bid on jobs, they would tell us what price we would be paid. Other companies were willing to take a loss in order to get the work. Game over. General Atomics has enjoyed a great run being the largest supplier of unmanned drones, but that time will also come to an end. Then, in order to compete, they will move their operations to a location that costs much less, just like the other aerospace companies have done.— September 25, 2010 6:33 p.m.

I think that Escondido could manage to put around 5,000 in the stands on average, so it isn't really a question of attendance. Five thousand per game is not horrible. The problem is in the city spending 50 million on something it doesn't need. Here's an idea: Schedule the AAA team to play home games when the Padres are on the road, and let them play at Petco.— September 25, 2010 5:50 p.m.

Non-speculative in terms of not awaiting FDA approval, or not relying on military contracts. That sort of manufacturing is speculative. While manufacturing in general is no sure thing, there are sectors in manufacturing that are much more solid.— September 24, 2010 7:52 p.m.

This is another chunk of proof that Americans are saving again. As Don noted, bad for the short-term, good for the long-term. Bad for San Diego? Perhaps. However, if the tourism industry declines, then isn't that healthy for the long-term? Creative destruction occurs when some sectors dry up, which opens up new and often more lucrative opportunities. It would be nice to see non-speculative manufacturing return to San Diego in some form.— September 24, 2010 7:16 p.m.

Chad, It's a very difficult thing to keep on top of. There is no shortage of newspapers in Mexico; unlike in the U.S., they seem to be thriving here. The problem is that you track these stories all over the place, but there's rarely any follow-up. You'll read about, say, a gun battle that leaves a certain number dead and even though the press won't publish the note that was left behind (mostly because the authorities wont release the content), the press might even speculate on which factions were battling. But there's never any follow-up, except when they capture a high-profile cartel member. While the press is busy with that person, there is a power grab going on and no one pays attention to it. Sidenote: Small amounts of drugs have already been decriminalized in Mexico. So far as the solutions, there is one glaring aspect that is mostly missed by anyone writing on drug smuggling in Mexico: Drugs are being smuggled into the U.S. Seems to me that the big ol' elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about is that the U.S. fails to stop people from smuggling drugs into the U.S. This means one of two things: Either the possibility exists for terrorists to smuggle nuclear bombs into the U.S. because the U.S. cannot control the situation, or the U.S. is allowing over twenty billion dollars each year of drugs to be smuggled in because - for whatever reason one wishes to consider - they simply permit it. That's what scares me, as an expat. For the record (hopefully qualifying that my opinion isn't based on ideology), I believe that all drugs should be legalized. That would certainly solve this particular problem. And to balance out any perceived criticisms, your research was excellent and presented very well.— September 24, 2010 3:13 p.m.

Oh man, I don't even know where to begin picking this apart. Chad, you've missed what I think are about four or five angles on this that would've been much more engaging. For example, you open with some statement about the "Tijuana cartel". There isn't one. In many examples where one wants to discover the source of something illicit, where the cause is otherwise unknown, they say one must "follow the money". While that might be true even in this case, a better way to find where there is no real control by any one source when it comes to smuggling in Mexico, is to follow the body count. Over twenty billion dollars worth of drugs per year (probably much more, I'm quoting the U.S. source here) cross the border. Where control of that is taken away, a vacuum develops immediately. Where no cartel is present, the vacuum is fought over by smaller factions. I have no idea if you read Spanish, but I recommend looking into violence in Reynosa, Juarez, and Monterrey. These are locations that have historically been controlled by one cartel - like Tijuana once was - and are now involved in turf wars. The idea that the Sinaloa cartel has a strong hold on anything is ridiculous. If it did, then Los Zetas would still be working for them. If it did, Mexico would not be seeing these turf battles.— September 23, 2010 4:43 a.m.
