Ketchup or Shut-Up

Ketchup (or catsup?) gets a bad rap. There's only so much that one can do to a fried potato, and I'm keeping my fries as far away as possible from Ranch dressing, thank you. Ketchup works just fine. And I take issue with the possibility of a beer being described as esoteric. It makes the beer sound snotty and elitist, which sort of makes the beer an irony considering that the perception of beer is that it's quite folksy as compared to, say, wine.

Tijuana Earthquake Might Displace 90,000

A 6.5 in Tijuana would be much worse than this estimate. Almost all dwellings are block or brick, the worst type of construction for withstanding a large quake. Even the roofs of most government-built housing (through the Infonavit program) are made of cement. Every house I have rented here has been constructed using cement block, and all had cement roofs, except for a brief 3 month stint when I first arrived. That house had cement block walls with a wood roof.

Lerach: Don't Blame Public Union Members. Blame Wall Street

I'm not speaking on behalf of the Reader, but most sites that allow links automatically default to opening the link in a new browser in order to prevent malicious attacks or any sort of liability from malicious websites. It could be that they simply haven't gotten around to changing the code to make this happen, and have done a quick-fix to discourage the bots/spammers from leaving links on automated comment posts or manual copy/paste comment posts. That would be my guess.

Hot Guacamole: Avocado Theft in North County

I doubt much of it winds up in Mexico. Avocados are a staple here, they are plentiful and cheaper than in the U.S. Were there a great demand and a higher price, then perhaps it would be worth it to smuggle them into Mexico, but my guess is that they can be sold in the U.S. for a much better profit. If it was clothes or shoes that were stolen, then Mexico would be a perfect destination. But with avocados, I would doubt it.

South Bay Community Services Looks Good on Paper

elgy, politics in the U.S. isn't my thing; I don't live there and although I might comment on U.S. politics here on the rare occasion, I tend to read and take mental notes. Everyone has the right and the privilege to an opinion on such topics. I simply felt the need to correct your statement about an author commenting on their own story as being unethical. Perhaps twenty years ago that could be the case, but currently, newspapers and magazines that are online encourage (and in some cases require) that the author is interactive in the website and that they also maintain a separate and accessible Facebook or Twitter account. Times have changed, my friend.

Trustee Plucked Trust Accounts to Gamble at Casinos

"We don't allow foreign (sovereign) governments to get involved in our elections..." I beg to differ. There is no doubt in my mind that candidates in the U.S. running for office at all high levels accept contributions that - through one form or another - ultimately come from governments and businesses outside of the U.S. The same politicians that promise campaign donation reform are the same politicians that accept such money and plead ignorance, and big surprise, no reforms are ever passed in legislature.
