What Does Ethics Mean?/edited again 8/7/2010

Aw, nan, I appreciate that, but really, it isn't necessary. Commenters who only leave entirely negative comments aren't taken seriously by anyone. This is especially true when they simply wish to argue a point by throwing up non-government websites with nebulus information. Those of us who have dealt extensively with EDD on many issues concerning employment and unemployment know precisely what qualifies and doesn't qualify, we don't need to search for websites to prove our point. Ignore the negativity, it's an irrational attempt at being relevant. Some leave comments only wishing to fish out information from you so that they can try to turn that information against you in some way. Obviously, not at all ethical.

"And most don't have a nosey little ferret like me trotting down to the county courthouse to root around in their business." It's so funny that you say this. A fellow writer just posited that the best thing that a writer could do was to listen, and I had to respond that perhaps, there is some truth in that, but good writers are very nosey. I've always feared that I'm not nosey enough ;) My wonderful parents, with all of their shortcomings (and I fully expect that my own kids will someday lovingly refer to my own), never clued me in. How about that? I reckon, like yourself, I'll be relying on my own aunt to fill in some of those gaps.

@ #73 This is absolutely true. In fact, there are many cases where an employee quits under duress and then files for unemployment and then gets it after a telephone interview with the EDD. It isn't a matter of "deserve" in the ethical sense. Employers pay for unemployment insurance (which obviously figures into what they can pay for salaries, hence, in a way, the employees shoulder that cost), and the EDD decides if the former employee is eligible. Former employees do not determine if they qualify for unemployment benefits, the EDD does that once the unemployed person files. And, in my many years in supervisory and management positions in having to deal with EDD inquiries and decisions, the vast majority of the time, they get it right. They are almost always entirely fair to both parties and very good at determining eligibility.

One trap that voters need to watch for: The one cent State tax increase that passed a couple of years ago is set to expire some time in 2011. Bet me that the campaign in favor of raising the City tax doesn't bring this up as though it's some sort of non-caveat toward voting in favor of the increase.

What Does Ethics Mean?/edited again 8/7/2010

A personal story about ethics. Well, first, if someone gives me too much change I always give it back. I don't want what's not mine. That way, I reckon I'll always get what's coming to me ;) But one incident, at the last place I worked: The housing bubble was about to burst and the majority of our business was in support of it. We were laying people off left and right, and then we got down to the point where it was going to be a difficult decision. I was brought into a meeting with my boss (the V.P.), and the owner/President. They both told me that I would need to lay off my right-hand man within a month. I argued. He was the wrong choice. He was younger than I was, and more easily employable elsewhere, and it was important to the company that they could rehire him when they recovered. They argued and insisted. I told them that I was a better lay-off candidate, that because of my age I wasn't going to find work soon and that they could hire me back with ease when they recovered. They refused, believing that he couldn't do what I did. So, I trained him to essentially do the machine work and run the production department. Then I quit. He's still there, the company is barely making it, but since his wife can't work and they are supporting small children and a house full of others, I did the ethical thing in spite of what the company felt was in their best interest. And I was right, over two years later I'm still not working at a regular job, but my wife works and we scrape by. I'm certain that six months after I quit they knew I had made the correct decision in spite of them, because they sent word that I should file for unemployment and they would not contest it. Being ethical pays off in the long run.
