What’s in a team name?
the akron minor league baseball team is the "rubber ducks" to pay homage to the rubber industry. the padres are named as such because the city was founded on a spanish mission, where padres live and work. the 49ers did not move to san jose. they move to santa clara, a city that is not san jose, it's not even in a county called san jose, it's in a county called santa clara. if a san diego team had been named the tigers, there would be local precedent, in that the san diego zoo is perhaps one of the world's most famous, and they have a very beautiful tiger habitat there, which is one of their most famous habitats. the san diego chargers are still only rumored to be moving to la and i haven't heard any talk of them keeping the san diego monicker. and, in general, while the vast majority of the competitive teams, clubs, and associations in the world pick generic names, or let fans submit their own, often non-localized, name suggestions, there are many names that do reflect the location of the team. especially more recently named or re-branded teams, and minor league baseball franchises.— March 26, 2015 10:15 a.m.
