City’s Public Transportation Deemed Best in the West
Yeah, I've always said that MTS can give me a call when they bring the trolley to the airport, the beaches, and the north county. The study seems to be an industry insider sponsored report, concerned only with costs per rider. I've always thought we could designate our rail system, 'The Trolley to Nowhere'. Or at least, nowhere anyone wants to go. And by the way, I live in Tierrasanta. There's only one bus line through here, and it only runs weekdays. I guess that keeps out the riff-raff, athough I remember there used to be a bus line that went directly from Tierrasanta to Mission Beach. Guess it wasn't cost effective.— March 31, 2012 7:42 a.m.

Smart Meter Opt-Out Plan Approved Conditionally
I don't know Don. I bought an older San Diego house about three years ago that came with a pool. The pool pump runs six hours a day, in peak time. If I have a smart meter (I haven't checked), then I'm probably paying premium prices for that peak power. That pump has to be at least 25% of my electric bill. If I could reduce that charge by half, it would probably be worth $10. But, of course this assumes the daily rate is lower than the peak rate, which, from past experience with SDG&E I might doubt. I do think the whole EM worry is silly though. I work in the power industry as an electrical field engineer, and my professional organization, IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) has pretty much debunked most consumer EM hazard worries over the years. My next door neighbor with his SW radio antenna probably bathes me with more EM waves than the power meter beside my house.— March 16, 2012 4:07 a.m.
DeMaio, Filner Remain Mayoral Front Runners
I'm just afraid that this is one of those races where I (and I suspect many others) won't be voting for a candidate, but against one. We really really, need the Russian option of 'none of the above'.— March 13, 2012 6:53 p.m.
Unemployment Rate Rises in County
Well, I know three of my co-workers are from Cuba, Pakistan, and Venezuela. But to be honest, the Cuban was already here, as I believe the Pakistani, and the Venezuelan was an intern for the company through college 9in the US). This is an international firm, headquartered in Switzerland, so we have company movement and re-assignments all over the globe. I don't know if that applies here. I seem to remember in the internal company job postings, for the USA jobs, they request that applicants be eligible to work in the US. So I assume they're not really recruiting H-1B applicants. I have not met any new persons that told me they were brought from another country, anyhow. But then, my HR is not exactly open and accountable to peons like me.— March 11, 2012 5:45 a.m.

Unemployment Rate Rises in County
I can help, if any of you folks know of any degreed electrical engineers willing to travel all over the US and world on a moment's notice to work, (physical, dirty, sweaty, hands on) with high voltage equipment in Texan coal fired power plants, Chilean copper mines, mountaintop hydro plants in the winter, Arabic shipyards, Arctic drilling operations (in January), ect; for less pay than they would get if they were an office engineer at Qualcomm, then I could even get a signing bonus from my employer (foreign company). i.e., some jobs go begging.— March 10, 2012 6:32 a.m.

Uptown Planners Hear Proposal to Rename Hillcrest Street After Harvey Milk
Spent time? Oh, for crying out loud. Wyatt Earp spent time in San Diego too, and I don't see anyone naming a street after him. The whole thing is, if the residents of the street in question want to rename it, then let them. But One, and only ONE, resident need block it. That's my experience anyhow.— March 5, 2012 10:49 p.m.
