Mayor Faulconer explains opposition to city council's declaration of environmental state of emergency
Mayor Sunny, you are so off-message here. Wash this whole stinking city off the face of the earth? But while you're ruminating in this un-Porter-Novelll way, let's hope the corrupt Board of Education is also swept away in the deluge.— November 21, 2015 5:56 p.m.
Is U-T’s new downtown HQ jinxed?
I hope commenter Bob Hudson knew Gordon Luce personally, because his loyalty is touching. But anyone who manages to bring down a savings bank has got to leave a lot of victims in the wreckage, so maybe Mr. Luce wasn't quite the humble decent fellow limned here. And let's face it, between Great American and the Bridgepoint scammers, that building carries some bad karma.— November 20, 2015 9:57 p.m.
A gift for a grieving friend
Wow. A guide for buying crap online to comfort a bereaved friend. Maybe not such a great idea.— November 19, 2015 7:33 p.m.
San Diegan’s Maui blowout takes on the Bee
Where's the "Independent Voters Project" part of this in-your-face we-do-it-because-we-can cynical and corrupt annual Hawaiian confab between state legislators and their corporate masters? Steve Peace, the teflon mastermind of this arrangement, was always rude and arrogant and believed himself to be the smartest guy in the room, no matter who else was present in his State Senate office. No wonder bad press doesn't faze him. Peace is old now and sidelined, but he's created a lucrative legacy business for his son -- and that's the "Independent Voters Project."— November 19, 2015 7:22 p.m.
I am come hither to die
What can the Reader reader possibly say to this last testament from an English martyr who lived in the 17th century but was canonized in the 20th? How about descriptions of the North American Jesuit martyrs who gruesomely died at the hands of native American tribes whom they wished to convert to Catholicism? Their stories made great reading when I was a child.— November 18, 2015 11:18 p.m.
Friday the 13th: good luck for Eli Broad?
I wish there were a translation in plain English provided to make clear what the 17.9% Tribune Company shareholder Oaktree is up to. I understand this to say Oaktree has gotten permission to sell off most of its 17.9% interest to other "investors" who surely would have to be suckers to buy into this foundering newspaper enterprise.Either that, or are you saying this is prequel to Eli Broad stepping in to buy up shares once held by Oaktree? When is the U-T editorial and advertising staff scheduled to move out of the building in Mission Valley? I was in the neighborhood the other day and it is stunning to see the delivery truck bays empty, vacant and silent. The press run for the San Diego paper is now happening in Los Angeles and it is trucked south daily. It all feels like End Times, not LA Times.— November 18, 2015 11:07 p.m.
Beach brawl, La Jolla style
Not to worry, there is no room for something else to be built next to Bob Whitney's massive bulky corner property, greenlighted for the last time by a craven City Council. The only person with an equally rich record for self-serving is Whitney's arch-enemy City Council candidate Joe La Cava. They are well-matched.— November 7, 2015 3:58 p.m.
San Diego ethics commission rejects call to recuse itself
I am tired of hearing in the Reader about Carl DeMaio, former City Councilman, failed mayoral candidate and failed candidate for Congress. I think he should be allowed to fade into deserved nonentity after all this time has passed.— November 7, 2015 3:50 p.m.
Another Aguirre, another case
Gary is Mike's brother. They are both good lawyers.— November 2, 2015 9:14 p.m.
Outraged parent applauds Coastal Commission ban following revelations of inbreeding
Ditto, Carla Porter, ditto.I am not only more cautious and hesitant to patronize places that keep animals in permanent captivity, I just don't go there anymore. Ever.— November 2, 2015 9:11 p.m.
