San Diego cops a deal for online espionage
I love it: "Geofeedia" is what you get for playing in the fields of "social media." This afternoon NPR aired a piece about audio surveillance on public transit systems in New Jersey and many other locations around the US of A. Citizens didn't like the idea, said there was "a presumption of privacy" when one is out in public. Not anymore.— April 15, 2016 10:29 p.m.
AMC don't text
You are my hero, Scott -- so funny and so right on. Zyklon-B for movie theater i-phone users is not too much to ask! (There will be whippersnappers who ask, what's Zyklon-B, and in my view, they can be included in the roundup.) When I read about the lamebrainstorm, I immediately calculated that I could never again go to AMC Fashion Valley 18 or the AMC La Jolla 12, further reducing the dwindling number of nearly-nearby movie houses. If Consumers Union can have an anti-robo-call campaign going that includes big offender ATT itself, maybe phone-free movie zones can become their next crusade.— April 15, 2016 5:41 p.m.
Is not paying taxes tantamount to terror?
Probably Gore was voted back into office because no one knew the details of his involvement at Ruby Ridge or his (lack of) involvement with those 9/11 terrorists who lived here and took flying lessons. I mean, I was alive and alert for both these disasters, but this is the first time I've ever read such explicit allegations made against the Sheriff. Where was all this information obtained? Correct me if I'm wrong, but it wasn't the Reader or the Union-Tribune.— April 14, 2016 11:01 p.m.
Is not paying taxes tantamount to terror?
I never knew that Sheriff Gore was on the scene at Ruby Ridge. Ouch.— April 12, 2016 7:32 p.m.
Padres front office praises promotions department’s decision to distribute rally towels during opening series
15-0? Yasiel Puig tripling and stealing and just looking good. 15-0? That set a record high shutout for an Opening Day game. And then the Padres set another record for not scoring a single run in their three-game opening series against the Dodgers. And it didn't even snow.— April 8, 2016 9:43 p.m.
Are funny numbers bad news for Union-Tribune?
A tale of woe that gets worse with every report. U-T can't even keep its online subscribers linked to its stories. The other day I got a full-color flyer in the mail touting different kinds of cut-rate print subscriptions. I nearly succumbed out of crushing guilt, but common sense prevailed. I don't need a U-T subscription when my daily LA Times runs stories from its sister-in-distress. I do think there will be a special place in hell for Tribune Company managers who are responsible for this excruciating decline of once-great newspapers.— April 4, 2016 8:47 p.m.
Time's about up for California Theatre
I've been, thanks to a guide who believes in historic preservation. It's nice, but the place lacked guests lounging by the vault. Homeless denizens of our finest city drift on the street outside, perhaps diminishing patrons' wish to linger and chat over drinks in the lobby. Actually, I don't remember seeing any such lounge-like amenities.— April 4, 2016 12:46 p.m.
SeaWorld reveals new logo after dead whale found on Torrey Pines beach
Well-named SeaWorld spokesman Robert Orcant is a dark thinker, but he's right about those cheap clickbait listicles. They are so disappointing!— April 2, 2016 2:29 p.m.
Time's about up for California Theatre
The California Theatre's an eyesore. Get rid of it. While you're at it, get rid of "the C Street corridor" too -- another creepy place. It's all maladroitsville. Forget about it. Let's just face facts, fellow citizens, schmekels run this town -- not restorers or preservationists or environmentalists or aesthetes or cineastes. Schmekels have been calling the shots in San Diego forever. And Democrats are as flip-floppy/strategic as Republicans: witness clowncilmembers Todd Gloria and Sherri Lightner and Mabel Cole. Note with dismay where the new architect-designed Central Library was jammed in -- over in Moorestown, hard by expensive Petco Park. And JMI Realty's head schmeckel John Moores is back on the scene, planning more sports venues and convention center stuff with schmelectricity deregulator Steve Peace and newest schmeckel on the block, self-styled savior of groped women, lawyer Cory Briggs.— March 30, 2016 8:57 p.m.
Beer, money, influence, and Accela
Budweiser swill to be sold amongst our artisanal brew pubs? The whole San Diego beer-thing is over-rated, in my opinion, but local craft brewers are right to object to the pedestrian presence of an Anheuser-Busch vendor among their ranks. As for the rest of this complicated web of insider connectivity, it is more than any civic watchdog can reasonably follow, so we appreciate Readerwriter Matt Potter.— March 30, 2016 1:16 p.m.
