Empowering young Muslims
Good for Luqmaan Bokhary, a high school student, for doing grassroots organizing to bring a Muslim presence into local Democratic Party operations in support of candidates in this presidential election year. The San Diego Democratic Party could use a fraction of the energy, enterprise and bravery that this kid has demonstrated.— September 14, 2016 11:06 p.m.
Pence set to raise lots of cents in La Jolla
Maybe Hillary Clinton is raising those grotesque sums of money in Los Angeles to sock away in anticipation of running for a second term. 2020 will not be the cakewalk that is 2016. Even if she brings back disgraced Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz who this year weighted the Party's operation against Bernie Sanders, Hillary surely will have a much tougher opponent next time than "rude demagogic dunce" Donald Trump. Given the pace of her money-grubbing, you'd think Bernie Sanders never existed.— September 5, 2016 10:41 p.m.
Glide control to Torrey Pines
UCSD is a bad neighbor. Scenic La Jolla Shores Drive is now flanked by big UCSD buildings that protrude from their lower hillside locations, blocking the western view of ocean and bay from the winding road. The gigantic and unsightly landscape-free Venter Institute is jammed up against Allen Field, one of few green parks in La Jolla that is used exclusively for youth soccer league play. Residential neighborhoods south and west of the main UCSD campus have wall-to-wall cars parked along their streets all day long. Apparently UCSD students also densely park up the dirt lots at the simple old gliderport -- which the City now proposes to develop further? The gliderport already has porta-potties and there's a lunch shack with outdoor picnic tables overlooking spectacular high vistas of sky and sea. The gliderport is perfect as it is.— September 3, 2016 4:04 p.m.
Something's fishy about dismal San Diego seafood sales
People I knew used to harvest mussels at Windansea in the months with R's in them and sometimes local divers would bring out abalone, but no more. And I never buy fish at the fishmarket or supermarket for home consumption. Even this photograph is a turn-off -- mackerel with sunken fisheyes. Ew. Dining on fish in a restaurant is much more appealing.— September 1, 2016 4:04 p.m.
$1 million check cut in big-money sprawl war
I am not particularly grateful, as never in 21 years' residence have I seen a blind person in my neighborhood or on this block. Plus, existing sloped corners for handicapped access already existed. Contractor never notified residents in advance that there would be 7 a.m. pile drivers to destroy existing handicapped corners -- window frames rattled, stucco fell, pictures on interior walls shifted. It sounded like barrel bombs over Aleppo. Then they chewed up three feet of my front yard, paved over the broken underground pipes and slapped ugly bumpy yellow plates into fresh concrete at the corners. When I shouted over the din what the hell are you doing, a worker told me to be glad that a few blocks of the cratered street would be repaved. I figured that had to be federal money, not Mayor Faulconer's largesse.— August 30, 2016 11:11 p.m.
$1 million check cut in big-money sprawl war
Repairing streets, water lines, sewers, parks and libraries -- there's an idea whose time has come, over and over again. But one caveat: the City contracts out (some, much, most, all?) this work to private vendors who then become fully liable for mistakes or damage caused to private property. When the private property owner files a claim for damages done by the City contractor, one is told weeks later to get in touch with the private company who did the work. I know, because today the City just kissed off my claim for $1000+ in damages done my lawn and underground sprinkler system last spring by a private company re-doing handicapped access corners adjacent to my house. I'm hoping the company's insurer is good for it.— August 30, 2016 5:49 p.m.
Dig a hole: Gene Wilder
I don't get all the Nazi allusions here nor do I understand the Martin Bormann fifth ticket fraud suggestion. But you're right: I never heard of the TV movie called "Thursday's Game," and watching it here was hilarious. The privacy-shattering waiting room, the gleeful kitchen scenes. A cognoscente's perfect tribute to Gene Wilder.— August 30, 2016 5:22 p.m.
Behold Gannett, prospective master of San Diego
No one grinned in past formal or even family photos. Only since digital cameras, smart phones and selfie-sticks do you see smiles manufactured on demand. The recent photo in the Reader of Peter Navarro and Lynn Schenk is a perfect example of that. Give me Grumpy anytime.— August 27, 2016 10:36 p.m.
Behold Gannett, prospective master of San Diego
Grinchy-looking, yes, but so much better than troncy-wonky too-many-dins at Ruth Cris Ferro. And thanks for those synonyms. Racking, as in on the medieval rack, will do.— August 27, 2016 10:23 p.m.
Behold Gannett, prospective master of San Diego
OMG, "the bedraggled kingdom" indeed. What are some synonyms for "excruciating," as we witness this slow death of out own local paper as well as the decapitation of the once-great Los Angeles Times?— August 26, 2016 12:57 p.m.
