Mobbed-up memories evoked by Trump's SD donor list
Good to know that Hillary will not need the $10,000-a-plate proceeds from that La Jolla event. Given the huge sums being spent by the DCCC to unseat Republican Congressman Darryl Issa and elect Democrat challenger and ex-Marine Doug Applegate, it is remarkable that even more money is required to feed the maw of 2016 politics. I guess there's never enough.— October 25, 2016 10:03 a.m.
Cottages to blossom in Balboa Park
I was incredulous to learn years ago that Mexico had no house of its own in Balboa Park. Congratulations to tireless advocate Enrique Morones for his advocacy and success in finally getting San Diego a House of Mexico: may its central shared patio come alive with Mexican music and dance.— October 25, 2016 9:53 a.m.
Mobbed-up memories evoked by Trump's SD donor list
Aside from the convoluted ancient history, how about Democrats' high-stakes fundraising today in La Jolla for Hillary Clinton, using Barack Obama as the drawing card?— October 24, 2016 5 p.m.
Book booze
Um, maybe this is what happens when readerwriter Matt Potter goes on vacation yet tries to keep his hand in from afar.— October 21, 2016 11:28 a.m.
Kris Michell offers “year-round vibrancy”
Are you kidding, Sjtorres? The record of hires and contracts coming out of Mayor Faulconer's office doesn't look non-partisan to me. Kris Michell is actually underpaid for the long service she has rendered San Diego's Republican establishment in her various jobs. Michell is usually quietly effective, not counting her Big Lie about expensive behemoth downtown football stadiums contributing to "vibrant world-class urban centers." Nothing could be further from the truth: downtown stadiums are empty shells for most of the year, ringed by acres of vertical or horizontal parking structures which create dead zones in a cityscape.— October 21, 2016 11:24 a.m.
U-T print circulation continues to plummet
When print newspapers and professional journalists disappear, this country will be in deep trouble. Who will watch the politicians and their "foundations" and self-interested corporate funders? Who will tell us about public utilities that rip off the public with the willing compliance of their citizen oversight committees appointed by the Governor? Who will report on the coastal watchdogs who are blind to the public interest, many of whom also are appointed by the Governor? Who will blow the whistle on banks that scandalously open unauthorized accounts in the names of their customers? I could go on, but I won't. We got a presidential election year like this one because print journalism is being gutted by its economic woes and because the business model of "greed is good" has been the low standard in all areas of American life for the last 30-plus years. The performance of the press in this too-long presidential contest has been shocking -- we are right to worry where it all will end.— October 18, 2016 11:56 a.m.
Grossmont Theatre to serve high-end food and drink
You are funny, Scott, with brisket on your phantom movie house menu. Happy new year.— October 4, 2016 11:24 p.m.
Clairemont’s home day-care shuffle
It's a pity that an antiquated inadequate San Diego Unified Early Childhood Education Center next to Hawthorne Elementary in Clairemont was shut down several years ago, but was never replaced with better bungalows and fresh staff. Families with limited means were left high and dry by the school district's Superintendent Cindy Marten. So people must resort to other alternatives like the "daycare" described here. Once again this fall, San Diego Unified suddenly shuttered another bunch of existing ECEs, leaving modest-income communities without an important affordable educational resource for preparing three-to five year-olds for the rigors of 21st century kindergarten. Maybe this is the only way Superintendent Marten can pare entrenched vested staff, since she is bound by sacrosanct union rules of seniority. Maybe San Diego Unified is facing a serious budget shortfall. Either way, it's bad for families and kids who are left high and dry.— September 16, 2016 8:24 p.m.
Empowering young Muslims
Peter Peters: Muslims constitute less than 1% of the population of the United States. American Muslims have taken a lot of abuse since 9/11-- some of it doubtless from their Christian majority brothers and sisters. Please, give this kid credit for his courage and positive approach to a bad deal, exacerbated by deplorable presidential candidate Donald Trump.— September 16, 2016 7:54 p.m.
San Diego U-T, brought to you by SDG&E
OMG, we get to read only SEMPRA/SDG&E "news" banners along with our renewed access to the finally-functional Union-Tribune's online website? Plus SEMPRA/SDG&E's octopus tentacles are over at KPBS/NPR radio and TV and on-line Voice of San Diego? I think that's called a trifecta. We look forward to hearing details about the exclusive terms.— September 15, 2016 5:05 p.m.
