Secrecy shrouds Faulconer’s SoccerCity favors
I'm looking forward to that happening, no matter who does it. Maybe the guys who want to destroy small human-scale Seaport Village could move their projects to the Sports Arena site.— March 14, 2017 5:16 p.m.
Secrecy shrouds Faulconer’s SoccerCity favors
Obama's Jay Carney didn't do too badly either. I forget where he went. Was it Apple? No, Amazon, I think. Anyway, let's hope Sean Spicer goes the distance. Melissa McCarthy's version of Spicey was so funny I would hate to see him leave.— March 14, 2017 5:07 p.m.
Brigantine plans for former Anthony's site hit big snag
The planned expansion sounds, well, too expansive. Calling a deck "public" that can't be reached except by entering the restaurant, walking through it and taking an elevator sounds like a Marx Brothers idea: It's a joke. Anthony's Fish Grotto was nostalgic but pretty tired. After all this time frying fish, the Ghios are probably tired too and ready to hit the beach. A new fish restaurant on that site will be fine, but let's hope the Coastal Commission requires genuine public access to the huge deck and that the Port of San Diego accedes to the demand. As for attorneys, don't knock 'em: good ones are worth their weight in gold.— March 9, 2017 9:42 p.m.
U-T gushes over Faulconer event
Setting aside misgivings about Mayor Kevin Faulconer's supporters/lobbyists being billed as "brands" and his slush fund as a "charity," if San Diego became known as "Soccer City" instead of "America's Finest City," I would be a happier citizen. But hat's off to commenter Cassander for that succinct takedown of Mayor Sunny and his money-making creation, One San Diego.— March 9, 2017 7:35 p.m.
Week of film classics returns to the Ken March 10
"McCabe and Mrs. Miller" and "Romeo and Juliet" are both gorgeous to look at and insanely romantic. I have always been too scared to go see "Reservoir Dogs." "Seven Samurai" is required viewing, but not more than once, in my opinion.— March 8, 2017 7:39 p.m.
Torrey Pines gliderport, take two
Well, without power how does the little shack cafe up there manage to heat up soup and other hot stuff on the menu? This is one of my favorite San Diego places on a brilliant March midday and it is a must-see for any visiting houseguest. Many years ago my neighbor and his son would launch their homemade glider aircraft -- not a hang glider -- from Torrey Pines and sail off into the wild blue yonder, part of a contest. The city shut that down, but the hang gliders are still taking off, catching a thermal and landing, usually without incident.— March 8, 2017 3:34 p.m.
Trump orders review for Soviet hacking at Oscars
Very funny how you dredged up now-senile-still-self-involved Warren Beatty's "Reds" past, Scott. I had forgotten how I loved that movie. Very Trumpish comments about Faye Dunaway's appearance, however, and at this writing on International Women's Day (March 8) I have to object. (You have unfortunate company: Duncan Shepherd once unforgivably slammed Simone Signoret for growing old in "Madame Rosa.")— March 8, 2017 3:17 p.m.
The making of a San Diego county supervisor via CNN
I've been here a long time too, ICare, but that list of nest-feathering San Diego politicians makes me think you are a candidate for buying a bridge. Let's just say I don't share your rosy view.— March 7, 2017 7:22 p.m.
The making of a San Diego county supervisor via CNN
"Heartcentered leadership." There's a phrase honored in the breach in San Diego politics. Nathan the Chameleon is a total faker, but Omar Passons? Never held public office, but wants to cut his teeth as one of five County Supervisors responsible for a budget of how much money and tremendous social responsibility? I am not persuaded by your fulsome description.— March 2, 2017 1:55 p.m.
Well-heeled tie
Wow, $492,469 represents SECOND place? Some of this is private compensation, right? Not just hard-won taxpayer dollars? But then again, this is the Age of Trump, where big-bucks salaries mean you are first-rate, gilded, highly competent and a very desirable friend to be cultivated by developers and wheeler-dealers who will take public land in the middle of Mission Valley and turn it into a windfall for themselves and your institution of so-called higher education.— March 1, 2017 6:59 p.m.
