Cole solicits 2018 cash before SoccerCity vote
Council President Myrtle Cole is a disgrace. She can hardly speak coherently without prompting from aides who prop her up with facts and figures. And she is so beholden to special interests in this city that she doesn't deserve to call herself a Democrat, as this blatant fundraiser flyer shows. She will have opponents in her re-election race --any one of whom is more qualified to hold office than she is. Let's hope her constituents rally and vote her out of office.— May 30, 2017 10:23 p.m.
Billionaire Conrad Prebys cut his son out of will
The final description here of your father exactly matches every anecdote I ever heard about him: I am sure this is how Conrad Prebys will be remembered. Dementia can utterly change its victims and cause deep distress and sorrow among loved ones. It seems you have "found" your father once again. I am so glad for you and your children and for a reassuring conclusion to this harrowing story.— May 25, 2017 3:51 p.m.
Prebys foundation president Debra Turner sues other board members
Wow, the other shoe has dropped. James Lauth sounds like an excellent lawyer and a principled man to have restored Eric Prebys as heir to some part of his dead father's fortune. Doubtless companion Debra Turner does think herself "effectively the Decedent's widow." For years the scary lady's name has been ubiquitous on every donor list in every music or theater program -- right next to the name of Conrad Prebys. I don't recall if you said: did Turner also benefit from Prebys' will?— May 23, 2017 9:26 p.m.
Billionaire Conrad Prebys cut his son out of will
Aside from news/not news arguments, various armchair legal opinions and mental heath assessments made here, Don Bauder understands the heart of this sad story: rich and famous locals ARE treated with kid gloves by mainstream media in San Diego and deceased whitewashed philanthropist Conrad Prebys "in the end...failed in his family obligations."— May 22, 2017 12:08 p.m.
Billionaire Conrad Prebys cut his son out of will
Don, this is a terrible story. Surely there must have been a lawyer or advisor who could have counseled Prebys to act more charitably toward his own son and the father of his grandchildren. It's only money, of course, and the grandkids were recognized with generous bequests, and the son is certainly gainfully employed, but Prebys' decision to deny his son entirely seems cruel and so sad, especially as money surely must have mattered to the old man as he had amassed so much of it.— May 18, 2017 7:36 p.m.
High Tech High requests permit for 1636 students instead of 1110
Will this be a second K-12 High Tech High, with the original one remaining at Liberty Station? Doesn't the Clairemont location provide much more acreage than what's available at Liberty Station? Projected occupancy at the Clairemont HTH is 526 more bodies than was originally planned, so there will be a lot more general traffic at the site, including teenage drivers. With its large campus located in a residential neighborhood, it seems to me HTH would want to be a good new neighbor and provide sufficient parking and well-designed drop-off on the school property itself.— May 18, 2017 5:44 p.m.
High Tech High to take over Horizon Christian Academy Clairemont site
San Diego Unified School District doesn't sell a building to itself in this transaction. SDUSD owned the property where Horizon was a longtime tenant, but SDUSD now has sold the buildings and land to High Tech High. HTH got financial help to make the purchase from an unknown philanthropist, possibly a member of the Irwin and Joan Jacobs family which financed the first High Tech High over at Liberty Station. San Diego Unified may have chartered the original HTH -- or the charter may have come from San Diego County or the State of California -- but a public school district is obliged to make sure that any charter within its jurisdiction is fiscally sound and operates according to the education laws of California. The point of charters is that they have their own managing boards and there is no micro-managing of operations by the school district. Charters also do not require a unionized teaching staff, though a majority of teachers may vote to join the teachers union.— May 18, 2017 4:59 p.m.
The doctor is late
Sheesh, surgeons with University of California credit cards? And no-permission-late-reporting of paid trips? That must be the UCSD Medical School of UC President Janet Napolitano who "edits" audits of the ten UC campuses before turning them in.— May 17, 2017 9:44 p.m.
Voice of eliminations
What's with the CEO and COO designations? I thought Voice of San Diego was an online newspaper with journalists and editors.— May 17, 2017 9:35 p.m.
SoccerCity friend Dene Oliver provides Pt. Loma house for Faulconer chief of staff's wedding
As always, Matt Potter leaves no stone unturned, going back to time in the slammer for political consultant Tom Shepard and the forced resignation of fallen Mayor Roger Hedgcock. And between then and now, San Diego has had so much political chicanery among public officials that it's no wonder the head of the Ethics Commission doesn't write down her any opinions anymore. She must want to keep her job and she must have a good lawyer. Nonetheless, while the process may be a little shady, I hope Mike Stone gets us a soccer stadium, a soccer team and a river park.— May 16, 2017 6:42 p.m.
