Voice of San Diego seeks a “deft touch” for “analyzing what needs to be discarded.”
As San Diego’s layoff-shrunken corps of reporters continues missing in action on big political stories of late, a local nonprofit, donor-backed news-and-opinion website has gone up on LinkedIn, seeking a new six-figure executive in charge of operations with an eye for unspecified eliminations.
“The business model for all journalism enterprises is in constant flux now,” says the job notice for a chief operating officer being sought by the Voice of San Diego. “The COO will need to be abreast of all developments and innovations while analyzing what needs to be discarded.”
The new honcho, to be paid between $110,000 and $125,000 a year, per the announcement, “will take over some responsibilities from the CEO, enabling him to focus on creating new products and aligning talent to the most important topics of the day. Once on board, the new COO will conduct a top-to-bottom review of our current systems and procedures, and make recommendations for further refinement. However, our culture is unique and highly productive so this will require a deft touch.”
News of the executive search comes as the Voice, which has long listed its top contributors as La Jolla billionaire Democrat Irwin Jacobs and his wife Joan, has been seeking to raise at least $100,000 from the public during what it calls its Spring Campaign.
The outfit’s most recent financial filing with the Internal Revenue Service, dated May 12 of last year, says that CEO and president Scott Lewis made $126,172 during calendar year 2015. The organization reported total revenue from contributions and grants as $1,823,041, along with $46,945 of so-called program service revenue. Total expenses were reported to have been $1,680,659.
