Those Zapf entrepreneurs
We've got a marvelous sea-change going on at City Hall. Congratulations to intrepid City Councilmember Monica Montgomery as she takes her place on the dais representing District 4, replacing Myrtle Cole. Monica used to work for the ACLU. And congratulations to new City Council President Georgette Gomez from City Heights. Georgette used to work for the Environmental Health Coalition. Everyone's feeling the hope!— December 12, 2018 1:44 p.m.
Peters declares for mayor, sort of
Mayor Scott Peters would be a blessing at this point. Being mayor of San Diego would not require flying back and forth across the continent every week and it would be a much greater public service than just keeping a seat in the House Dem column. Unlike a few years ago when Peters first ran for Congress and prevailed, there are now plenty of Democrats who could fill his seat in the House of Representatives. Our languishing City could use a leader who's a lawyer (check,) served on City Council (check,) who's represented us admirably in Washington and who's learned the ropes of federal interface and assistance (check.) Scott Peters would make an excellent mayor -- better than Barbara Bry, who couldn't even hang on to proposed reasonable regulation of vacation-rentals-by-owner -- and better than Todd Gloria whose ambition still exceeds his experience.— December 12, 2018 1:25 p.m.
Mayoral Musings
I agree entirely and also noticed the absence of any argument against L. How could that happen? Maybe San Diego voters are so desperate for actual representation they actually believe Bob Ottilie's line that Measure L would be an incentive for those elusive "better-qualified candidates." But note that even without it, we got "better people" in Monica Montgomery of District 4 who was elected by the people of her community independent of Democratic Party or Labor backing. And Montgomery defeated sellout Council President Myrtle Cole to boot.— November 30, 2018 3:49 p.m.
Mayoral Musings
The expressed rationales of politicians for their own salary increases are always cringe-worthy. I do not understand how this measure passed.— November 30, 2018 3:09 p.m.
Liberty Station quietly sold for $71 million
Well, is he dead or isn't he? If he is, somebody in the McMillin (with an "i") family made out pretty well. They are still financing stuff over at SDSU. And who's to say what lies on the Other Side? Maybe there are streets paved with ill-gotten gold.— November 30, 2018 2:12 p.m.
Liberty Station quietly sold for $71 million
As I recall, the Naval Training Center got turned over to local developer Corky McMillan for $1. Now, as redeveloped "Liberty Station," it is quietly sold for $71 million almost 20 years later. I don't know about "slime," "scum" and "filth," but descriptors "typical" and "sleazy" work for me. I do look forward to knowing what complicit silent Mayor Faulconer will do after he leaves office.— November 29, 2018 4:49 p.m.
San Diego sole-source overrun soars by $7 million
Who on our City Council voted to approve the "sole-source permit processing?" It couldn't have been Georgette Gomez because she hadn't been elected from her district at that point. Inquiring minds want to know, especially as the Council presidency is coming up for a vote.— November 27, 2018 10:05 p.m.
Scooter lobbyists behind scenes
There is no way Scott Peters could be described as "a bleeding heart liberal."— November 23, 2018 4:37 p.m.
Scooter lobbyists behind scenes
Oh, quite right, fact-checker. Peters is just the richest Democrat in the House of Representatives.— November 21, 2018 8:57 p.m.
Scooter lobbyists behind scenes
Who's responsible for the snide caption on the photo of U-T editor Jeff Light? Really, I wouldn't call that a "self-satisfied" grin: it's hardly a grin at all, and I'm sure Light's not happy about the decline in numbers of charities on his paid-list. Also, it's good to know that Dem Congressman Scott Peters used money (donated to him by supporters) to sink GOP City Councilwoman Lori Zapf. Aside from the fact that he's the richest member of Congress, now I will never give him a dime again. There oughta be a law prohibiting this practice. Still and all, I think Peters would make a credible, even darn good, mayor.— November 21, 2018 6:28 p.m.
