Pit bully
How wonderful that a Taxpayers Association representative was helpful to anniej. And how remarkable that the helper turned out to be the heavily GOP-funded and Union-Tribune-backed candidate for the newly-districted City Council seat. How serendipitous that anniej's helper became one of the paid staffers in the office of then-Councilman now-Mayor Kevin Faulconer -- who by rights should be helping his helper to get ahead. Personally, I thank City Council candidate Democrat Carol Kim for offering voters a better choice.— July 24, 2014 6:32 p.m.
UCSD's almost-million-dollar man
With take-home pay of $741,000 per annum, Dr. Viviano can look any way he wants. Probably the guy's worth THREE-QUARTERS OF A MILLION DOLLARS just because of all the dirty-work involved in shuttering a disaster and getting rid of a child pornographer CEO. Whatever happened to Jerry Brown's ascetic approach to the UC system? In his first gubernatorial incarnation he was much tougher about UC excess -- and compared to the present gilded age, the old days look pretty spartan. If we didn't know better, we'd think Matt Potter made this story up. It's disgusting.— July 23, 2014 9:47 p.m.
Near naked and unafraid of the SDPD

Near naked and unafraid of the SDPD
The Los Angeles Times today in an editorial excoriates the San Diego Police Department for its unconstitutional forced-photography of local strippers. It's about time word got out concerning our corrupt cop culture and the department's long history of lazy, laissez-faire, highly politicized leadership. The piece didn't mention recent retiree SDPD Chief Bill Lansdowne or his buddy and predecessor ex-mayor/-ex-cop Jerry Sanders or their longtime protege and now Chief Shelley Zimmerman -- but it should have.— July 22, 2014 10:20 a.m.
Diary of a Young influence-peddler
Thanks for this story. I have been wondering whatever happened to our AC/DC ex-City Council President Tony Young. It was convenient to claim he was a Democrat at the beginning of his political career, but Young never showed much fealty to liberal or progressive values, ever, and often carried water for Downtown's GOP players when on Council, so probably we shouldn't be surprised that he has opted entirely for what's best economically for Tony Young. You can't argue with what has become the American Way. I think coming up African-American in this town means learning to play ball with the old-time white power structure to get ahead, support your family, pay for those private college tuitions. It's sad, but Tony Young is much like many of his black predecessors: there are no John Lewises here.— July 18, 2014 12:51 p.m.
Faulconer moves to privatize city email archive
When you have a lot to hide, you need to do a lot of housekeeping. I forgot to mention the Jerry Sanders cabal of cronies who were the big-spending do-nothing Balboa Park Centennial Committee headed by that community leader Julie Dubick. $3 million taxpayer dollars down the drain and she is refusing to provide her email correspondence during the period she was getting paid handsomely to head that group.— July 15, 2014 3:17 p.m.
Faulconer moves to privatize city email archive
Right, ever-flexible ethicist Stacey Fulhorst. So how do you feel about this new maneuver by Mayor Faulconer? I would say it looks like a rush to move to the single repository and to do some culling on the way. There's a lot of stuff to get rid of -- as much of the Filner Period as possible to avoid embarrassing if not incriminating pretty much everybody important downtown. Council President Todd Gloria and City Attorney Jan Goldsmith; our bland blond Mayor Faulconer himself; District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and Sheriff Bill Gore. And then there are those San Diego Police Department scandals with Chief Lansdowne beating a hasty retreat into second retirement before we ever could find out who covered up what. Let's hope litigator Cory Briggs hurries back from vacation to put a crimp in these public record "consolidation" plans.— July 14, 2014 9:42 p.m.
No trolley dancing here, folks
Couldn't we just blame all this on Governor Jerry Brown who "realigned" our prison populations, transferring hardened criminals from heavy-duty State prison facilities into our down-home County Sheriff-run detention operations -- as well as onto our red trolley system? A few years ago one of these guys, an imprisoned gangbanger defendant, smuggled a razor in his mouth into the courtroom and slashed the face of his own public defender attorney in a slick attempt to get a mistrial. The gambit failed, the trial moved to conclusion, defense counsel rallied, the prosecution triumphed and the gangbanger got a longer sentence for having tried to murder a fellow prison inmate. Obviously, people should pay the required fare on public transportation, no exceptions, no excuses.— July 13, 2014 4:05 p.m.
Dinosaur Democrat
No one ever accused Scott Peters of being a Progressive Democrat. I'd say he is Barely A Democrat. And in that respect, he is perfect for the Congressional district he represents now and will be re-elected to in November. Alex Roth may be a Trojan horse, as BlueSouthPark suggests, so let's hope that Congressman Peters is reading the Reader and keeping his wits about him. It's amazing -- all those ex-U-T reporters out there for hire -- but maybe this is a case of "keeping your enemies close," given the odious Roth/Sanders/Gloria connections.— July 11, 2014 6:43 p.m.
DeMaio gets campaign fund payback
I don't know about the "what was once a great nation" part given our treatment of Native Americans and slaves and the progeny of slaves, but today ego, power, and special interest money are so intertwined that it only is the rare politician who steps away from the mechanics of getting ahead to do "what's right for the country." As I think about it and looking for a bright side, I'd say we have been pretty fortunate in our California Senate delegation of Boxer and Feinstein -- one more liberal than the other but each one devoted to the job, hardworking and essentially honest (enough.)— July 11, 2014 4:42 p.m.
