Turning tale of the tuna
A lot of canned fish in the supermarket comes from faraway places like Vietnam and Thailand. Read the labels. The most recent can of Bumblebee that I bought still says San Diego CA. But the trend makes me worry when I imagine foreign canneries.— December 31, 2014 8:43 p.m.
Nuke transport chief noted for hostility
Thanks, Matt Potter, for putting a big target on San Diego's harbor area for any nut who wants to scout out our many thermonuclear toys with the intent to make mischief. You also don't say if the Operations Squad Commander with anger management issues lives here or far away. If he's local, somebody should get him a gift card at Massage Envy.— December 31, 2014 3:04 p.m.
Destroyed orchid
Right, when the Reader appoints a writer to cover organized labor, I'll be checking to see if Burnham Wood has come to Dunsinane. (The other day NPR's "On the Media" said there were only two dedicated labor reporters left on American daily papers.) You might wish to read the online San Diego Free Press, which frequently represents union voices and points of view and may in fact get a little help from the local AFL-CIO Labor Council.— December 31, 2014 2:54 p.m.
Appellate court weighs grisly pit bull death scene
I hope Mr. McCartney did not become a pitbull expert through some terrible firsthand experience. His citations are impressive. Second only to pitbulls' incorrigible natures are the willfull ignorance, stubborness and passive aggression of pitbull owners themselves. It's too bad the law never deals with them as severely as the animals.— December 28, 2014 7:22 p.m.
Keane eyes
Scott, "Edward Scissorhands" was an interesting and strange movie, as was "Frankenweenie" and "Alice in Wonderland." I don't think you will ever see Tim Burton making powerful statements supporting mainstream politically correct topics. Burton just sees the world differently. Making a film about the artist who created those weird kitschy paintings instead of the woman featured in "Tracks" speaks volumes. I don't know about "Lisa Marie," but I heard on the radio that he's splitting with his 13-year-companion Helena Bonham Carter with whom he has a couple of kids.— December 24, 2014 5:57 p.m.
New faces at CPUC. But new broom unlikely
Between this bad news about Gov. Jerry Brown's tepid appointments to the troubled CPUC and the Los Angeles Times' recent two-part dissection of the special sentencing deal cut with the complicity of then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on behalf of Esteban Nunez, the incarcerated murderous punk son of former Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, it could shake your faith in the integrity of politicians, even former seminarians.— December 23, 2014 4:50 p.m.
Appeals court sides with CPUC, denies intervenor fees
Mikey is NOT a royal pain: he is true blue. When he sees injustice, he works to right the wrong. In this case, he fought and won a huge case and is due those intervenor fees. Listen up, Ninth Circuit: this is an honest man who deserves recompense.— December 17, 2014 12:27 p.m.
Horse die-offs and high roller dearth cut Del Mar take
A good description of reality, Ponzi -- "animal abuse events...the last bastion of freak shows and circuses...."— December 17, 2014 12:17 p.m.
Six-foot orgasm
Lovely that you occasionally run videos of music performances -- in this instance showing rather than just telling the the reader what a symphony sounds like.— December 16, 2014 10:16 p.m.
Horse die-offs and high roller dearth cut Del Mar take
"Horse die-offs" is an odd way to describe the disasters that happened at Del Mar last summer -- it's a little like the "EITs" of CIA chief John Brennan. No wonder Del Mar attendance dropped: if I were at the track on a day that a horse died in front of me, I would be mighty slow to return another time.— December 16, 2014 10 p.m.
