Drunk with power
The Hillcrest Business Association is wise to enlist an effective lobbyist to salvage scarce parking spaces if it is trying to counteract Miami-based Deco-Bike, the outfit that has a city contract to provide ugly ungainly bikes at ugly ungainly ad-bearing curbside bike stands. The Deco-Bike "regional bicycle plan" is not as benignly green as you make it sound. The solar-charged bikes have to be stored in, well, sunny places; the stanchions take up a lot of room in crowded commercial zones; and bike rental fees cost a fortune. La Jolla turned Deco-Bike down as unsightly and unsuitable to its terrain and streetscapes.— March 19, 2015 2:26 p.m.
NCAA Tournament preview
Officially, Harvard doesn't award athletic scholarships. But if you are a star athlete with a so-so academic record and you want to apply, I guarantee the way will be smoothed for you to be accepted. There are Harvard alumni groups who live and breathe (and finance) Harvard sports.— March 18, 2015 4:48 p.m.
Susan Davis does Japan
Actually, Alex, not ALL politicians are whores, even if these days everyone pays something to play.— March 17, 2015 5:29 p.m.
SDSU’s oversized travel tabs hit by audit
Alex, let's keep the blame where it belongs -- with the President of the institution pictured here -- well-compensated SDSU President Elliot Hirschman.— March 17, 2015 5:26 p.m.
SDSU’s oversized travel tabs hit by audit
Well, the remedy-clock is ticking over at SDSU where honchos' travel expenses have been routinely green-lighted by their subordinates and spousal travel is essentially unregulated. Do officials over there think taxpayers won't mind? If only they could get rid of stickler red tape that cramps their free-wheeling style!— March 17, 2015 3:02 p.m.
Susan Davis does Japan
CaptD, such an important point -- so important to keep this unfolding story alive as Big Energy interests here and in Japan hope to bury the actual and political fallout from both San Onofre and Fukushima in the sands of time. What's the dark saying: we get the representation we deserve? No mention of Fukushima recovery efforts on Susan Davis' most recent Japan itinerary. Also, I would think an elected official with freebie world-travel habits of the Democratic Congresswoman and husband would cut back on their paid gallivanting in the face of the Reader's regular reporting on and scathing criticism of these "educational" junkets.— March 17, 2015 2:46 p.m.
Touching donors
How many big donor hand holders can be hired at a single UC campus? When is Governor Brown going to intervene and put an end to this gilding-the-lily at taxpayers' expense? Let the Legislature restore some of UC's funding. Get rid of UC President Janet Napolitano. Hold the line on further undergraduate tuition increases. Restore to Californians at least 10% of the over 20% of admission spots that now go to out-of-staters and foreigners.— March 12, 2015 6:16 p.m.
Coronado carpetbagger
Residents of Coronado on the San Diego Housing Commission? Is there no rule to prevent this? There oughta be a law.— March 12, 2015 6:05 p.m.
Leaked: Kevin Faulconer's Inauguration Poem
If Yeats hadn't been up today, more than a year later, I would have missed this. Let's never let facts get in the way of pure genius. Congratulations.— March 12, 2015 5:51 p.m.
The Salvation
Three stars are about two too many. I thought this was a silly movie -- a Danish idea of a Western with very little "nascent civilization." Violence among men, violence against women, violence against children, avarice, cowardice and oh, don't forget, oil. I will grant you that Mads Mikkelsen has an extraordinary face.— March 10, 2015 10:36 p.m.
