Plug-in cars threaten SDG&E's power grid
Aside from blackouts, which can be kinda fun, what else bad happens in the "early morning hours" when a transformer is deprived of its "normal cool-down period?" Like, garage fires when everybody is sleeping? Yikes.— June 5, 2015 2:46 p.m.
Dig a hole: Landmark La Jolla Village
You are nice to say that about David Singer who died a year ago. He is gone but not forgotten.— June 5, 2015 2:29 p.m.
A mugshot is what they seek
Oh my god, say it isn't so! City Attorney Goldsmith represents himself publicly as hirsute, when in fact he is bald? He disguises his true appearance with false hair? Surely that's illegal! Who will indict this prosecutor? Maybe the hapless innocent Chalker could be enlisted -- perhaps he's gone to law school since he was tried a few years ago by Goldsmith for drawing in colored chalk on a public sidewalk outside Bank of America. He might be willing to take the case.— June 5, 2015 2:18 p.m.
A mugshot is what they seek
I take back any previous dismissive remark I may have made about Pat Flannery. Like many Irishmen, Flannery is articulate, committed to the truth and relentless in its pursuit. He has run down the facts and points out how cavalierly inewsource's Racino treats them. But we must remember that Brad Racino is on a paid mission --20 stories thus far -- trying to smear environmental lawyer Cory Briggs.— June 5, 2015 2:07 p.m.
There's gold in that burgh
Terrible story. How do we know this, Don?— June 4, 2015 11:01 p.m.
Dig a hole: Landmark La Jolla Village
Scott, Arclight costs a fortune, although it's a nice place. The parking is a bear, however. Fortunately they gave up that cutsey hipster thing of having people with i-pads wander around the lobby selling tickets: no lines, no order, no fairness about first-come first-served, me no like. Your're right about the MOPA theater with the twinkling lights on the ceiling: it is beautiful. We can thank the late wonderful David Singer, architect, for designing that space. If no one takes advantage of it, fault lies with MOPA management, if you ask me. Hillcrest is fine, close second to LJ four-plex. Ken is far-but-good, Gaslamp has no parking and is sort of creepy-tall. Reading Clairemont 14 will have to up their game, but it's fine. They recently raised their prices too. We could always go back to the Digital Gym. (Not really. Not if I can help it.) Losing LJ Landmark is sad.— June 4, 2015 10:59 p.m.
La Jolla Cove tower — why so long?
I liked your comment, "I've seen worse," as a testament to simplicity. So if you think the Cove lifeguard tower is taking a long time and verging on grandiose, stay tuned for the coming total rebuilding of bathrooms and showers at the adjacent Cove park. It is La Jolla and private funds are being raised! Some have questioned the need for any of these interminable lifeguard station projects, since the entire Cove area has become colonized by legally protected stinking sea lions who sometimes bite tourists and block stairways to the beach. The Casa Cove site you mention was closed for six months for seal pupping and has just reopened. I think there's a new summer movie coming about wild animals taking back their turf.— June 3, 2015 10:53 p.m.
Made-up news on steroids
The Reader and its writers answer to a higher power and do not require credit or respect. They just keep on keeping on, providing us with news and amusement, and fielding the advertising that pays for it all. We appreciate it.— June 3, 2015 10:37 p.m.
Contemporary art pay
Hugh Davies is very well-regarded in the museum world. From the figures published here, it seems his excellent salary has been dropping over the last three years. Thanks, Hugh, for sticking with us, even though the take-home is diminishing -- perhaps to make room for Ms Kanjo.— June 3, 2015 10:29 p.m.
Under Beutner’s influence
Jim Madaffer, Byron Wear and Tony Young -- not exactly princes among men, though they live like kings. They know their way around City Hall and that is worth at least $3.9 million to developers. Tony Young, a black Democrat from District 4, is especially disappointing for the many ways he has sold out. But hey, this is America, and if you can make a buck or a million as a lobbyist, go for it. Many many slime balls have done it before these guys. Somehow I don't think hedge fund moralist Austin Beutner is going to save us from ourselves.— June 3, 2015 10:19 p.m.
