Sloppy money handling plagues San Diego Unified
ASB funds are a minefield of possible misuse -- innocent or otherwise -- and principals' heads have rolled when malfeasance is discovered. It seems odd to me that all schools don't have routinized required procedures for properly handling ASB money which, as is pointed out here, is not chump change.— July 13, 2015 3:37 p.m.
(Over)cast your vote
And here I've been thinking all along that our mayor is Sunny Fair, when in fact it's our weather chief. Every gray day is a good day out where I live -- cement mixers and huge construction trucks still shoulder their way down tiny neighborhood lanes to villa-fy the Neighborhood of Mitt, but piggy loud social media groupies in cars with their nachos, Red Bull and coolers of alcohol don't show up when it's cool and cloudy. Probably it's not just the weather: there are cops now patrolling Marine Street beach on three-wheeled trikes, ready to cite drinkers and pot smokers.— July 11, 2015 6:45 p.m.
Viviano abruptly departs UCSD in turmoil’s midst
So many thanks for mentioning this terrible photograph -- "a pair of drinking buddies who just got a good start." I didn't have the guts to bring up attire and appearance. But I think you unfairly malign custodial staffs everywhere: these two guys look like business-model-loving-academics who are taking home high six-figure salaries paid by California taxpayers, their UCSD shambles notwithstanding.— July 10, 2015 10:56 p.m.
Learn Latin or buy bicycle insurance? Hmm...
This was very interesting. I'm on the phone tomorrow to USAA.— July 9, 2015 9:23 p.m.
Viviano abruptly departs UCSD in turmoil’s midst
UCSD's departing head of Health Sciences made $850,000 a year? They were running a failed cancer institute in Nevada? What is going on up there? UC President Janet Napolitano has okayed admission for more out-of-state and foreign undergraduate students than ever before and the moratorium on fees will last only two more years before tuition hikes resume. Napolitano needs to go.— July 9, 2015 8:48 p.m.
Hysteria won't build a stadium
I forgot to mention the price-tag for the "referendum"-- a costly special election. The whole thing is such a rip-off. Meanwhile, unrepaired pot-holed streets destroy our cars, we have less water at higher rates, the price of electricity is going up and our public school classrooms have 35 kids to one teacher. Maybe this is why idiots need their football at any price.— July 9, 2015 11:31 a.m.
North Island repair shop busts Navy's budget
Welcome to San Diego, Senator McCain! You are right: war has a huge cost.— July 8, 2015 10:48 p.m.
Dick-rated
Some think of La Cava as an ambitious Dick, but he is a Joe.— July 8, 2015 5:20 p.m.
Hysteria won't build a stadium
Remind me, someone, how many football games a year are played in an old coliseum or even an expensive new one? Canepa should be worried: he writes about the Chargers for a living. No Chargers, no paycheck for him. I'm praying that the sky-god will deliver us from this endlessly tedious, boring re-hash of will-they-stay-or-will-they-go and allow us sing in unison the annoying Disney ditty, "Let It Go, Let It Go." If Mayor Faulconer really wanted to distinguish himself as Future Governor material, he would stop the proposed $2.1 million allocation of precious city resources to a team of EIR consultants to opine about Qualcomm's condition in anticipation of a popular "referendum" on salvaging that stadium at tremendous public expense.— July 8, 2015 5:13 p.m.
Dave Roberts hand-slapped for hidden $5000
A North County matron (whom I always assumed was a rock-ribbed Republican) speculated to me at a North County Fourth of July picnic, "I'm sure it's the Republicans going after Dave," whom she said she has known and respected for years. I was surprised, as I too had figured Roberts' troubles for one more orchestrated GOP take-down of a charismatic Democratic officeholder -- but then, I am Democrat. It's quaint that you mention "non-partisan," a phrase I haven't heard used for years. Actually, I thought Dave Roberts inherited a lot of that staff whose mass desertions and accusations have a peculiarly familiar histrionic ring and, up until now, Dave Roberts has been well-regarded as both policymaker and manager.— July 7, 2015 8:36 p.m.
