Not that I don't like Steve and the Pescadero Pickers song, it does seem to me that the tune is in fact the theme from Gilligans Island. Sure the tune is catchy, it's been catchy for nearly 50 years. That's why almost every person in the world can recognize it. This not only goes against the contest rules, but copyright laws as well. The contest is not just for original lyrics, but original music as well. Or if not original, the music must be at least owned by the submitter, (the rules are very clear about the music). As for the Weird Al argument, yes, he does copy music. However, he gets pemission, pays to copy it and is not submitting it in contests as original music. So,Steve and the Pescadero Pickers, good lyrics, nice rendition of the tune, but too bad it does not fit into the rules of the contest. An interesting note about one of Weird Al's songs: Weird Al was given permission by Coolio's label (who owned the rights) to parody Ganstas Paradise, and Al was given the impression that the artist had also given his blessings. Apparently Coolio did not know about this and got quite miffed over the whole thing. However, it's not like Gangsta Paradise was a completly original song to begin with. It was a reworking of Stevie Wonders song Pastime Paradise. Weird Al and Collio have now made nice-nice, and Weird Al now makes sure he speaks directly to the artists before he records a parody, even though he may already have the legal permission.— March 18, 2010 7:43 a.m.
