Drive-In Theaters in San Diego: Complete Illustrated History 1947 thru 2008 (45 new pics added 7-4-09!)

Great great story, Jay - brings back lots of San Diego drive-in memories myself... right around the same time as your reminiscing... late 70's, early 80's. You know, another thing that got me going from your article is the reminiscing about our old roads / freeways, and how they’ve changed (for the bigger and more crowded but not necessarily the better). Note that the theater program for the Aero Drive-In not only refers to as “National Avenue” what is now “National City Blvd.,” but it also refers to it as Highway 101! Also note that the newspaper advertisement for the TU-VU Drive-in doesn’t show its location as 5535 Kearny Villa Road, it lists it as “Highway 395 at Clairmont Mesa Blvd. That’s old Hwy 395, which I believe is what is now a combination of the 163 and 15 freeways up thru Escondido and beyond to Temecula, Riverside, San Berdoo, etc. 395 in metro San Diego was a bit before my time (although I do remember the "old" 15 Fwy as being what is now Kearny Villa Road north of the 52), but I do remember in my youth that I-15 ended, and merged into 395, just north of Escondido by Lawrence Welk Village. That was about 1979, I think, when I would drive up that way to get to Big Bear. Once you hit Temecula (which at that time was a small town just starting to be developed into the monstrosity it's become today), I-15 would begin again, but it ran on what it is now 215.... just two lanes each direction. The fwy that is now called the 15 (which runs past Lake Elsinore to Corona) did not exist past Lake Elsinore. Back then, 15 (now 215) followed the old 395 thru Hemit and Perris into Riverside. Sorry, your articles always get me off on a tangent remembering the good ol' days in San Diego and Southern California. Hmm… that brings to mind that maybe a story on the glory days of SoCal freeways, and the history of, and your reminiscing of, what our highways and freeways used to be like back then, would be of interest to alot of people. I happened to accidentally discover alot of sites covering old-school roadmaps of San Diego, O.C., and L.A. Quite interesting. Thanks again, Jay - good stuff!
