Over 2,500 police fired in Baja California since 2007
I'm guessing that's the number who couldn't come up with the bribes for their commanders? Bribery and corruption is simply part of the culture in Mexico. If you need anything done, it's known and expected that you have to slip a few pesos to the government officials involved. Their salaries are kept low because of the expectation that they'll make a certain amount in bribes. So how can you be surprised when they are a little too corrupt, when they expect a little too much? The only way for Mexico to ever have a shot at a reasonable society is to completely end all corruption... pay salaries that can be lived on and zealously prosecute every bribe, every time, with no exception. But nobody wants that... "Oh, you don't understand, that's just the way things are done, we can't go after these guys for doing what they've always done and what their fathers did and what their fathers did... it's just how things work here in Mexico!" And so the cycle of corruption and links between the cartels and the government, police, Army, etc. wil continue. It's really sad.— September 17, 2012 2:31 p.m.
"Shadowy" conservative action group offers internship at University of San Diego
If some "progressive" group was soliciting students as members or volunteers or employees, would it have been referred to as "shadowy"? Good Lord, the stilted, biased language...— September 17, 2012 2:26 p.m.
Sonoma County Supervisor Arrested at Downtown Nightclub
Brown allowed state employees to unionize. With that one decision, he caused far more harm to the state than Schwarzenegger ever could. And Schwarzenegger is 100% a product of idiot California voters... we threw out Gray Davis and elected Arnold to reform things. He presented an election of items for reform... and 60% of the state listened to hundreds of millions of dollars worth of whining by unions and special interests and rejected it. So of course he became just another Sacramento hack politician... that's what we wanted. We didn't want actual change... we just wanted someone new to lie to us.— September 13, 2012 2:10 p.m.
Car Hits Moped Rider in Point Loma
I don't understand what would be gained by such hair-splitting. She didn't stop. Period. Would you be so quick to look for excuses if the car had run the stop sign? "Oh, maybe the brakes didn't work, maybe it wasn't their fault!" What difference does it make???— September 13, 2012 2:05 p.m.
San Diego Bayfair -- 09/14/12 at Crown Point
Gotta love public property being gated off for the financial benefit of a private organization!— September 13, 2012 2:01 p.m.
Chargers Stadium, Affordable or Not
If a new stadium would be so fantastic, why don't the Chargers just build one? Why do they need my money when I don't care a fig about organized sports? Why can't San Diego sports lovers all donate to a stadium project and leave the rest of us alone?— September 13, 2012 1:51 p.m.
Chargers Stadium, Affordable or Not
Whatever you do, keep voting Republican or Democrat! It doesn't matter that they both want, and vote for, the same things... you can feel really smug that "your guy" won, or really fired up that he lost. And next election, you can vote for more of the same again, and keep blaming the other guy when you get it! Under no circumstance should you vote for a third party... why, that would be throwing your vote away!— September 13, 2012 1:50 p.m.
Wall Street's High-Speed Gambling
We know for a fact that Congress will fail to act, because there are only two possibilities... 1) stop the deficit spending, which will send the economy into a tailspin; or 2) double the taxes that the middle class pays (because "the poor" pay nothing or receive more than anything they pay in, and "the rich" never pay... they're the ones who have the influence over the lawmakers, and who have the ability to duck and weave around any taxes), which will send the economy into a tailspin. I'm in the house that says stop the spending and take the hit. If you make $50K per year and spend $25K above that on credit cards, you're used to living on $75K At some point, you will be forced to stop spending. You can howl about how unacceptable a 33% reduction in your standard of living (read: GNP) is, but you will have no choice but to adapt to living on the $50K you make.— August 31, 2012 10:05 a.m.
Wall Street's High-Speed Gambling
Government coffers are empty only because they cannot stop spending money faster than they bring it in. Increased revenue has done nothing but exacerbate the problem. But HFT does need to be curbed. It's supposed to be illegal to post an offer to buy or sell with no intent to execute. There are several things that could be done to destroy HFT without levying a tax that winds up coming out of our pockets.— August 31, 2012 9:59 a.m.
Lost Your Job? Relax.
Dead on. The biggest takeaway here is to make looking for a job your job. Get up every morning and spend eight hours networking, canvassing, etc. There is work out there, but it isn't going to fall into your lap. And there are opportunities in every downturn.— August 31, 2012 9:54 a.m.
