Qualcomm traveling Wall Street's road
"maximize shareholder value," "create stockholder value," and "drive stockholder value." How are those "buzzwords"? Those are the primary duties of a publicly-traded company's executives! No company exists to "provide jobs". They're there to make money for their owners.— July 23, 2015 1:55 p.m.
Liquid loophole?
What, exactly, is "equitability" here? Can I have as much water as any farmer? Or should the farmer only be allowed to have as much water as me? Of course, now we hear, "That's ridiculous, obviously the farmer needs more water than you do!" Really? Who determines that? What if I want to be a farmer, too? We should absolutely have a "water bankruptcy" where these ancient "rights" and agreements are swept away, just like in a financial bankruptcy when an entity owes more than it can pay, and everyone recognizes that "what's owed" is now irrelevant, and the only question left is, "What's available, and who gets how much?" But after that we should be left with a free, open market; not some government bureaucracy deciding what's "fair" and who gets what.— July 23, 2015 8:19 a.m.
Liquid loophole?
Yes, raising the price makes it more available. First, higher prices encourage conservation like no bleating government announcement ever could. Second, in a free market, higher profits attract investment by those seeking to make money. What's your solution when demand exceeds supply? Leave the price the same? Lower it? What mechanism do you propose, how would it work, and what would it accomplish?— July 23, 2015 8:15 a.m.
Disappointed with the Reader as a whole
God, I love it when people carp about how San Diego isn't a "real city", that we aren't into sports enough, that things are so much better somewhere else. But... why are they still here, trying to convince us? Or are they trying to convince themselves? San Diego is an AWESOME city. It's the only place in California I would consider living in. This is the only place with enough pluses to make putting up with the California-Sacramaneto-San Francisco insanity worth it. Lots of states I'd far rather live in, but none of them have San Diego. I highly encourage those who are unhappy to go. Why suffer? Why help to clog up the roads and push up housing prices? Go, fly, be free! Let us dolts stay here and wallow in our misery!— July 23, 2015 8:09 a.m.
Disappointed with the Reader as a whole
Emily Hearton - So I guess we won't be seeing you at next year's Opening Day?— July 23, 2015 8:05 a.m.
Ales Spanos – beneficiary of public largesse
This. The people who are crying that San Diego will have a "void" if the Chargers leave, who proclaim their "pride" in and "loyalty" to the Chargers, etc. Very literally some of the stupidest people on the face of the planet. Sports is a fun diversion. If it's more to you, you really should seek some help... you can never achieve happiness from external sources. If "your team" winning fulfills your life, what are you going to do when they lose?— July 23, 2015 7:59 a.m.
To all the like-bombers out there
If you have your facebook set up to page you every time someone "likes" you, the problem isn't with the dope who's pressing "like". Just turn off all notifications. Facebook is not important.— July 22, 2015 1:27 p.m.
What part of "Do Not Call" is confusing?
Why do people feel compelled to answer the phone every time it rings? My phone is for MY convenience, not yours. If I see who's calling and I want to talk to them, I answer. Otherwise, the call goes to voicemail. If you don't leave a message, problem solved. If you do and I'm not interested, I delete it, problem solved. If I believe it's important, I call back. Problem solved.— July 22, 2015 1:24 p.m.
Thanks anyway on the clean energy option
Explain LA's DWP.— July 20, 2015 12:56 p.m.
Putting the cart before the homeless
You should need a library card to get into a library. That'd be the easiest way to keep out the bums who want to abuse libraries. "I have to have it right next to me to instantly get medication" is just as lame an excuse as "I have a prescription to have my dog with me at all times". But I'd rather see people taking dogs into libraries than bums pushing stolen shopping carts full of reeking garbage.— July 20, 2015 12:51 p.m.
