Suit claims police raids at Cheetahs caused loss of business
I don't understand the mania around strip bars. So what if some people want to pay strippers? If you believe women are forced into that work, investigate that. "Oh, but there's prostitution!" So what? Two consenting adults exchanging sex for money is a long way from the top of my list of worries. "There is drug use!" So what? If someone wants to fry their brains on drugs, that's their business. "There's crime!" Of course there is! When you criminalize behavior people want to engage in, you force them to become criminals, and they now have no choice but to associate with criminals, and they cannot turn to the police to resolve issues so they have to handle it themselves. Legalize it, regulate it, tax it, and most of the problems will evaporate. But that isn't what anyone wants, certainly not the police who derive so much funding from the War On Behavior I Don't Approve Of.— August 5, 2015 8:42 a.m.
Water wars: View from the delta
"Actually, the current drought may turn out to be much worse than simply the worst in California’s recorded history." California's recorded history is literally insignificant in geological and climatological timeframes. There is more than a little bit of evidence that our "recorded history" has been an unusually wet period of time, and that California is simply reverting to the mean. There are too many people in this state. Period. Our first course of action should be to discourage more population growth. Stop issuing building permits, and stop subsidizing poverty. Millions of people who are living here cannot actually afford to live here... stop subsidizing them, they'll have to move, and a significantly smaller population (along with less traffic, less energy use, less pollution, less wear-and-tear and demand for social services, roads, schools, etc.) will leave us with a sustainable population. Also, just because agriculture has been around in this desert for 150 years does not mean it needs to stay. I'm sorry if the land that's been in your family since the Gold Rush will become worthless when you can't farm it productively any more, and that productively farming it means an unlimited supply of free water you help yourself to before everyone else. The world changes. Lots of places with plenty of water where you can farm, and food can be brought here by truck or train as easily from Kansas as from the Central Valley.— August 5, 2015 8:38 a.m.
Navy Seal punches another San Diego immigrant
"Singh later filed a lawsuit against the Navy and Blackwell." The Navy had nothing to do with this. I hope they stonewall this "immigrant". Let him try to collect from the person who did bad deeds, not from the taxpayer.— August 4, 2015 4:52 p.m.
San Diego Unified accused of ignoring needs of autistic boy
It is a quandry... my girlfriend's son is on the spectrum, and he simply cannot be in a regular classroom. But where do we strike the balance? Obviously, parents always want 100% of everything for their child... personalized attention, aides, therapies, etc. But how much can the district spend on one kid? Times how many special needs kids? How many "regular" kids get shortchanged because huge amounts of money go to a tiny segment of the student population? And don't get me started on, "Well, we need more money, then!"... public education already consumes half of the state's budget, and we have one of the worst systems in the nation (for the students... for the teachers, it's a gravy train with guaranteed lifetime jobs, salaries far above the median, taxpayer-backed pensions for decades, free or extremely cheap Cadillac benefits packages, etc.)— August 4, 2015 9:25 a.m.
San Diego Unified accused of ignoring needs of autistic boy
Well, in a world where everyone is special, everyone is a snowflake, everyone is a victim; of course we all need special privileges and treatment! Why, I can't be treated like everyone else! This is yet another argument for education vouchers... let mainstream public schools provide a basic education, and let everyone with "special needs" take their voucher and go to a specialized program.— August 4, 2015 9:21 a.m.
Burglars rifle cars for remotes
Or, maybe we could start to hand out meaningful punishment to thieves? We try to rehabilitate on a first offense, lock them up for years for a second, and lock them up for decades or life for a third. Every time someone bleats that theft is a "non-violent" crime that shouldn't be punished, we create another legion of worthless bottom-feeding scum that are very literally draining our lives away. When I buy something, I'm paying with money I earned by selling my time. A thief is effectively stealing part of my life from me, and I have absolutely zero problem with the way Texas handles this... you get up to no good after the sun goes down, you just might get shot over it. If your life is worth more than the contents of my car, great! Stay away from my car, and we have no problem.— August 3, 2015 8:58 a.m.
Environmentalists to Governor Brown: stop fracking California
Today, they screech, "Stop fracking! Stop drilling! Stop refining!" Tomorrow, they bleat "Gas prices are too high! Evil oil companies are gouging us, government should punish them with more regulations and taxes!"— August 3, 2015 8:52 a.m.
Notorious drug house goes up in flames
Yes, really. I don't care that a druggie made a choice to get herself dead. I very much care that a dog that had no choice in the matter died.— August 3, 2015 8:51 a.m.
Opponentless mayor backed by $1.2 million
Some people love to bleat about "big money special interests" backing Republicans. Those very same people have absolutely no problem whatsoever with corrupt unions and other leftist interests pouring money into Democratic politics. I'd far rather have a government that's trying to encourage profitable businesses to create jobs and bring real money into the economy than one that encourages dependence, sloth, and entitlements. We're all always better off with people who are working for a living than people living off of government checks.— August 3, 2015 8:46 a.m.
Two Oktoberfest weekends possible for La Mesa
"The two-day 2015 event will be held from noon to 10 p.m. on the boulevard east of Spring. The earlier closing time corresponds to curfew for juveniles. " Why is an Oktoberfest, which is by definition a 21+ event, being hamstrung by concerns about "juveniles"? Don't let them in. If they "congregate" or create a problem or are out after curfew, send the cops... why screw up everyone else? Lots of other people don't want to have to have it stop at 10 because of what some kids might do.— August 3, 2015 8:42 a.m.
