San Diego businesses chafe under Yelp's increasing power
I use Yelp fairly frequently. I've written a few dozen reviews over the past few years. I love to share really good experiences, really bad experiences, and I try to remember to share just regular ones. And when I'm looking for a business, I do check Yelp. I usually skip through and read the one and two star reviews. If they seem to show a pattern of bad behavior, I'll skip them. But by reading the reviews, sometimes I see people who are just being PITAs, and I've gone anyway, and left a good or great review after having a good experience. A lot of people will treat Yelp as gospel, and there isn't much we can do about that. Hopefully, more people will use Yelp as one tool, not as the answer.— October 12, 2015 10:54 a.m.
Bill Kolender’s long goodbye
Kolender's last election should have been overturned. He was already deep into dementia, and was propped up as an incumbent solely for the purpose of using that guaranteed victory to issue the job to Bill Gore. There should have been a REAL election where the voters got to decide. Of course, it's our fault for generally re-electing incumbent Sheriffs with no real review. But we might have wound up with someone who respected the Constitution instead of someone who oversaw the murder of a 14 year old and his mother because some dude was alleged to have a shotgun that might have been a little shorter than some arbitrary length.— October 12, 2015 10:34 a.m.
County sued for ignoring jumper's history
Except that isn't whjat you want at all. I feel very confident that what you want is for the taxpayers to write a large check while all individuals involved keep their jobs, their salaries, their benefits, and their pensions. If we wanted REAL reform, we'd hold INDIVIDUALS to account for their bad acts. We'd give all public agencies 100% immunity from civil torts, and our legal system would be dedicated to investigating what happened, determining if one or more individuals did bad acts, and hold them liable. But there are no deep pockets there, so nobody's interested. Much better to slop huge amounts of public money around to the hordes of vultures who descend.— October 12, 2015 10:26 a.m.
Dollar Rent A Car demands reporters' names
Rent from a reputable national agency, not "We're A Buck Cheaper Than The Other Guys", and issues like that mostly or completely disappear. It's just never happened to me.— October 12, 2015 10:23 a.m.
Dollar Rent A Car demands reporters' names
If it's "too much", don't park there. Problem solved! Or, buy the garage and charge a "fair" rate. Problem solved for everyone! I park near the airport all the time. More and more, those structures are full unless you have reservations. That means they aren't charging enough. I've made it a habit to always make a reservation, I think I pay about $17 a day, and I'm happy to do it. If that doesn't work for you, just don't do it!— October 12, 2015 10:20 a.m.
L.A. overcharges S.D. for water
How much of that will be rebated to taxpayers? Let me guess... somewhere between nothing and an insultingly paltry amount. Lawyers, unions, and bureaucrats get most or all of it.— October 12, 2015 10:15 a.m.
Border crossing rules have changed at San Ysidro
If you forget your ID, you can always present Andrew Jackson's. I'm sure they'll agree the resemblance is striking...— October 7, 2015 4:06 p.m.
More criticism of county transportation plan
STOP... ISSUING... BUILDING... PERMITS!!! We cannot grow and grow and grow. We cannot become a collection of 200 story hives with 100,000 people packed into each one. There are too many people in San Diego as it is, and not enough water or road capacity for those who are already here. We need a moratorium on building, and we need to let the resulting rise in housing prices send those who cannot afford to live here to somewhere they can afford to live.— October 5, 2015 3:32 p.m.
Tribune Publishing sharpens the ax
I hope they get rid of that idiot Michael Hiltzik. Let him go work for the Venezuela Times or become an economic advisor in Zimbabwe.— October 5, 2015 3:29 p.m.
State coastal commission bonkers?
Well, if there are "no feasible off-site alternatives to the proposed project. No permanent fuel repository or other interim storage facility exists." that's because of leftists and NIMBYs. The spent fuel exists. There's no way to go back in time an uninvent nuclear power. We need to get Yucca Mountain operational. And we need real research into alternative energy, including various nuclear technologies like pebble-bed reactors. Today, all we get is handouts to political favorites like Solyndra who take the money and run. The private sector can solve this problem, but not when it's taxed and regulated to far beyond death. Note that GOVERNMENT is an enormous part of the problems surrounding the demise of SONGS.— October 5, 2015 3:28 p.m.
