Evil Empire
Formed in Spring 1979 and originally an all-girl band, the Dinettes released a single recorded at Accusound, “Poison” b/w “T.V.” They also recorded demos at Straighta Head Sound, and a live tape was later circulated from a November 1979 gig at the Deaf Club in San Francisco (which is indeed for deaf people). Rooks split in 1980, and the Dinettes later allowed men to integrate the group, though they ultimately split for good around 1981. Rooks had come from the Cockpits, who were also originally all-girl, tho they later allowed men in that group too (most notably future Beat Farmer Country Dick Montana). Rooks went on to join Trowsers, later becoming a cello player. She turned up around 2003 in Cabaret Oscuro, with Bauhaus bassist David J.

A Most Exceptional Duck
I've heard how rich duck eggs are, but I haven't been able to bring myself to eating any duck-ish food since making friends with so many ducks (and I have many - I carry scratch feed in my car, cuz you never know when you're gonna meet a duck....). I don't even eat at restaurants that serve duck any more - just my way of showing a little duckin' solidarity.

9 Songs
Curiously, Duncan's negative review of this movie-I've-never-heard-of actually makes me want to checkitout! It sounds like one of the few contemporary underground-meets-mainstream crossovers that actually attempts something innovative, in an era where true cinematic innovations are quite scarce (3D doesn't count, especially to those of us whose eyesight doesn't mesh with the fuggin "technology"). As Duncan mentions, the Brown Bunny was mostly a failed attempt at this kinda movie-mashup - he FAILS to mention the much better Short Bus, by Hedwig and the Angry Inch creator*star John Cameron Mitchell, most of which I liked a lot and which also took a matter-of-fact approach to folding incidental hardcore pornography into an actual, factual film. Sooner or later, someone's gonna get the recipe right ---

The Grunion Are Running
Eating grunion kept me alive thru the summer of 1979, when I lived on Bacon Street in OB - no job, no savings, living off $$ from giving blood and plasma, but I had a freezer full of grunion and lots of butter pads from the IHOP. No spices or anything - just fried up the fish in butter and ate 'em whole. Frying softened up the bones 'n' stuff ----- I doubt I could eat one like that now if you put a gun to my head, but I sher was a grunion fan that summer....happy spawning, lil guys 'n' gals!

..ATOT...
I stand corrected, CF - your use of the term is indeed defensible, and your reasoning makes some(what convoluted) sense, so I defer to your obvious worldwide expertise and willingly acknowledge that there are indeed alternate applicable terminologies --- I mean, SOMEbody's gotta say "tom-AHH-toe," or the song won't make sense to the 99 percent of other people who say "tom-ATE-oe," right? However, in the interest of continuity and clarity, for our predominantly U.S. based and English-speaking readership, I choose to continue referring to blog entries as "posts" and resultant comments as "threads," as seems far more common and (to me) sensible. I apologize for attempting to "correct" your own choice to do otherwise -

A Most Exceptional Duck
BTW, duck emissions make for amazing fertilizer! We transformed a desert back yard into a tropical jungle within just a few months, by giving Bilbo free rein on the range. He even learned to eat only the harmful bugs we pointed out to him, so we had a totally rockin' garden, just a block from 70th and El Cajon Boulevard -
— April 28, 2010 9:47 a.m.
..ATOT...
So, CF, say you have a sock with some loose string thread dangling. And you cut off the thread. Do you tell people "I cut a thread off my sock" or "I cut a thread off my thread"? The blog post is the subject, while the resultant and attendant thread is the predicate dangling below it - I realize internet terminology is still developing, and anyone is welcome to fabricate or imagine their own private contrary meanings for words, no matter how nonsensical and indefensible, but don't expect the rest of the English speaking world to conform! MentalTwist's blog post itself is an interesting peek inside an interesting head -- thanks for reposting! (Or "re-threading" if your initials are CF, heh heh).
— April 28, 2010 9:42 a.m.
..ATOT...
MentalTwist will have to fix the post (removing all the codes) and repost rather than webadmin - what needs fixing in the comment thread? Looks fine from here ---

I Want William Shatner
Have you seen the local Shatner musical impersonator ShatMan?
http://www.sandiegoreader.com/bands/shatman/
He's ShatTastic! I almost shat myself --- Also, local band Shoestring Strap appears in a movie with Shatner, Circus Of Life, wherein he plays a hippie-haired cartoonist pornographer. Almost as good as his "real life" role in Free Enterprise!

She turned up around 2003 in Cabaret Oscuro, with Bauhaus bassist David J.— April 29, 2010 8:34 p.m.
A Most Exceptional Duck
I've heard how rich duck eggs are, but I haven't been able to bring myself to eating any duck-ish food since making friends with so many ducks (and I have many - I carry scratch feed in my car, cuz you never know when you're gonna meet a duck....). I don't even eat at restaurants that serve duck any more - just my way of showing a little duckin' solidarity.— April 29, 2010 5:26 p.m.
Sooner or later, someone's gonna get the recipe right ---— April 29, 2010 4:49 p.m.
Frying softened up the bones 'n' stuff ----- I doubt I could eat one like that now if you put a gun to my head, but I sher was a grunion fan that summer....happy spawning, lil guys 'n' gals!— April 29, 2010 4:38 p.m.

I apologize for attempting to "correct" your own choice to do otherwise -— April 28, 2010 11:59 a.m.
A Most Exceptional Duck
BTW, duck emissions make for amazing fertilizer! We transformed a desert back yard into a tropical jungle within just a few months, by giving Bilbo free rein on the range. He even learned to eat only the harmful bugs we pointed out to him, so we had a totally rockin' garden, just a block from 70th and El Cajon Boulevard -— April 28, 2010 9:47 a.m.

(Or "re-threading" if your initials are CF, heh heh).— April 28, 2010 9:42 a.m.

MentalTwist will have to fix the post (removing all the codes) and repost rather than webadmin - what needs fixing in the comment thread? Looks fine from here ---— April 27, 2010 10:06 p.m.
I Want William Shatner
Have you seen the local Shatner musical impersonator ShatMan? http://www.sandiegoreader.com/bands/shatman/ He's ShatTastic! I almost shat myself --- Also, local band Shoestring Strap appears in a movie with Shatner, Circus Of Life, wherein he plays a hippie-haired cartoonist pornographer. Almost as good as his "real life" role in Free Enterprise!— April 27, 2010 10:01 p.m.
