Posthumous Bangs

As a fan of zsazsazsa's music (assuming his screen name stems from his album title), and as the guy who wrote one of the Reader features about him (if my assumption is correct), AND as someone of (mixed)Mexican blood myself, I'd respectfully point out that the article does NOT refer to Mexicans as spics. Lester Bangs did. Fault me if you wish for choosing that quote - if slaying the messenger is your wont - but I maintain that I found the quote to best sum up how Bangs felt about his childhood neighborhood, in the most succinct and direct way, in the fewest possible words.

Posthumous Bangs

There is so much story behind Bangs' local-centric history that it was a daunting challenge to distill into a 300 word Blurt. As such, the choices of what to include were deliberate and considered at length - Bangs himself and his contemporaries and associates have literally written books' worth of material about his Diego dayz. My challenge was to distill into a handful of words demonstrating to both the uninitiated and those in the know just how epically stream-of-consciousness he was, in the way he spoke, wrote, and lived. With only space for a couple of quotes, and only one of them from Bangs himself, the quote I chose seemed to best reflect his often-aberrant and brutal way of expressing himself. The story is about Bangs growing up in SD, and that's exactly how Bangs felt about his adoptive hometown - tho dead all these years, the self-revealing way he spoke still clearly pisses people off. Yet more evidence of how great a writer he really was ---

Oddly better on the small screen than in theaters, where the emptiness of the cinematography, dialogue, and soundtrack was far more expansive and, thus, glaring. And, by the end of the first hour, annoying. This is UNlike the original, which simply must be enjoyed on the big screen to appreciate what it accomplishes in a way that no subsequent ApeFest has managed. How can you say you’ve truly experienced the original Planet Of The Apes if you’ve never been deafened by a room full of people who erupt like socker hooligans when Charlton Heston growls “Get your sticking paws off me, you d*ed dirty ape!” In any event, this week an upcoming PREquel to the Apes saga was announced, Rise of the Apes, to feature "state of the art" CGI animation and live action. I think this ground was pretty well covered in the TV series, but if the Tim Burton remake established one thing, it's that any story can be made into an ape story, as long as you can pay the FX bills ----

Let's hope some of that lavish attention spent on restoring the Balboa Theatre can now be directed toward this tragic downtown gem --- I saw many great shows here in the 70s and 80s. Wonderful venue, now an urban cave full of oft-destructive transients --

Cold!

Holy BMT, that happened to ME at the Subway near 63rd and El Cajon! That was San Diego's first Subway, opened in 1982 by a couple of guys who quickly expanded to Mission Gorge and then all over the city - I worked the night shift in summer 1983. I was actually on the phone talking to one of the owners when a guy walked in wearing a ski mask and pulling a sawed off shotgun from under his coat. He pointed it at me and said "Time to hang up" - I said "I need to go now" and hung up. After emptying the register, the guy was demanding I open the floor safe, but I wasn't lying when I said I didn't have the combination. He kept screaming "Is it worth your life!?!" A friend of mine had just been pistol whipped working the night shift at a gas station, so I figured I was at least in for some pain. But, praise whatever gawd watches over underemployed fools like me, the guy locked me in the walk-in freezer instead. Tho there WAS a push-latch inside the freezer door to open it from within, the guy jammed a roll of paper towels into the outside door latch, so I was locked in. I was already contemplating which sandwich meat would be easiest to thaw in my mouth in case I was in there all night when my boss opened up the door and let me out - after he'd hung up, he had a weird vibe about the way I ended the call so abruptly. When nobody was answering the phone, he came down to checkitout. Lesson learned? Work at home --- it's not safe out there!

The Hills Have Eyes

Ewww! I know this brutefest was a big moneymaker for the drive-ins who were struggling, but - to my mind - flicks like that are too artless to even qualify as moviemaking. The same way art galleries are cheapened by scamsters who crap on a canvas, movie theaters are besmirched by lowest common denominator crapfests like the Hills Have Eyes.
