They usually revolve around holidays, but I'd like to see multicontrib overviews on, say, hot-button social issues, or more local-centric compilations like last year's "What I Drink and Where I Drink It" cover story --

The new admonition about comment etiquette doesn't mean Admin will be cutting more comments - I'm fairly sure they'll remain reluctant to dish out a cyber-spanking, unless/until someone egregiously breaks the rules. The only difference is that the comment rules are now clear to any and all commentators --- the rest of the song remains the same!

This one actually made me angry, for having wasted my time and attention - and for sullying the otherwise almost perfect performance records of both William Macy (other than Mystery Men) and Steve Buschemi. After No Country For Old Men ("serial killer requires air tank pressurizer..."), I'm thru with the Coens ---- and remaking True Grit is no way to change my mind. Oh, as for Big Lebowski - even the worst marksman in the world, if they fire enough bullets, they'll hit the mark once. To my mind, that's how an anomaly like Lebowski happened --- it's good DESPITE the Coens.

I can't figure out whether, to enjoy movies by the Coen Brothers, one must be really, really, smart, or really, really stupid. Maybe just easily entertained? And yet Mr. Shepherd gives it five stars, same as he did with (the merely wonderful) Pee Wee's Big Adventure. I watch these Coen movies, and I feel like everyone who recommended that I do so is conspiring to play some strange joke on me --- like when friends tell me they think Sarah Jessica Parker is hot (whereas I side with Peter Griffith of Family Guy, who once declared "Her face looks like a foot") ---

Watchmen

The 5-disc DVD set includes two full commentaries - director Zack Snyder's provides excellent context, especially his explanations behind why certain things were changed from the original graphic novel storyline. The commentary by original comic illustrator Dave Gibbons, however, earns my vote as the worst DVD commentary ever. Less than an hour into it, he's already said "That looks exactly like the original comic" at LEAST 50 times - I stopped counting after that. I think he said three or four interesting things over the whole disc - and I'm talking about the expanded director's cut WITH the animated Black Freighter interludes, so we're looking at almost four hours of inane chatter. Tho he sometimes goes up to five minutes without saying a word, like he's just watching the thing with us, not commenting. Good thing the dude can draw so well - a talk show host, he'll never be ---

In the Mouth of Madness

Mr. Shepherd's Twilight Zone citing seems off the mark - I'd say the storytelling is more akin to HP Lovecraft than Serling, Matheson, and their fellow Zoners, all of them far less darkly inclined than Mr. Carpenter and company. I like a lot of Carpenter movies. And I'm a big fan of Lovecraftian mythology. I just today read that comic book author Alan Moore is working on a new Lovecraft-based comic series to debut soon - Moore wrote the comics that the movies Watchmen, V For Vendetta, From Hell, AND League of Extraordinary Gentlemen were based on (and the second Swamp Thing movie, which many people hate but I really dig, Dick Durock's rubber suit zippers and all).
