Behind the Green Door

Groundbreaking at the time, but now merely quaint (at best) and almost unwatchable. When I worked with Marilyn Chambers on the Still Insatiable comic book and the Triple-X Cinema Cartoon History book, she told me this was the only movie she ever made that she ended up being embarrassed by. Not because of the hardcore sex footage, which was rather well filmed (at least compared to porn's later de-evolution), but rather because her character seems to exhibit "Stockholm Syndrome," having been kidnapped against her will but then embracing (in Biblical extremes) her captors. BTW, contrary to popular urban mythology, the "black man with the crotch cut out of his longjohns" referenced by Mr. Shepherd is NOT pro football player Ben Davidson - Ben did appear in the film, but in a non-sex role. And while I'm debunking, well-endowed porn star John Holmes was NOT the actor who played Eddie Haskell on Leave it to Beaver (that actor, Ken Osmond, actually sued over Holmes being promoted thusly) ---

Pleasantville

More Beverly Cleary than Rod Serling - think Ramona the Pest, Henry Huggins, and their fellow Americana suburbanites 'round Klickitat Street. The premise - that, beneath the Norman Rockwellesque exterior, there lies a fascist devotion to conformity that MUST be defeated, in the name of individuality - is one also explored by Horatio Alger, Mark Twain, and all their literary ilk who postulated that being under anyone's thumb - even/especially society's - is to be a slave. Watching Pleasantville and pondering its inspirations, the author that most comes to mind is Friedrich Nietzsche, who challenged the (deceptive) mores and (blind) rituals of Christianity in much the same way that the teens of Pleasantville join their real-world visitor in bringing color, literature, culture, and - most of all - NEW IDEAS to their hitherto B&W sitcom world --
