Pussycat Theaters - a comprehensive history of a California dynasty
RIP Pussycat co-founder and filmmaker Dave Friedman, who passed away on Valentine's Day at the age of 87 -- in interviews done for the Reader last year and in 2009, he provided invaluable insight into the early days of the Pussycat Theatre chain ---

Barnabas Collins Has Risen From the Grave (Again!) - the Return of Dark Shadows
I finally got the Big Finish “Night Whispers” CD, with Jonathan Frid recording his first performance as Barnabas in almost 40 years… I have to admit I was quite startled at how ravaged his voice is – not quite Jack Klugman-ravaged, but somewhat akin. It took almost half the show before my mind was able to reconcile that it was actually Jonathan Frid I was listening to. That said, his performance is quite stellar – even the cadence sounds different than his younger self, but he eventually drew me into the story, or rather his series of reflective monologues, which is mostly what the CD contains. Karlen’s Willie is mainly there just to bounce dialogue off, and it’s comical when poor ol’ Willie tries to interject one of his own flashbacks (“Yeah, that reminds me of….”), only to have Barnabas cut him off with the impatience of someone who has very little time left to “share” ---- The late Barbara Steele is also basically a narrative utility here, albeit one lovely to listen to, especially compared to the hoarse (night)whispers of Karlen and Frid. I couldn’t help but picture in my mind the rapidly-aged Barnabas of House of DS as Frid spoke – which was all the more off putting because his character here doesn’t appear to be late in his mortal life. He speaks of many hopeful things for the future, even tho he sounds for all the world like a man practice-reading his last will and testament. All in all, it was a thrill to finally hear Jonathan Frid as Barnabas one more time --- tho I’ve never felt the full weight of those 40 years quite so much as I did listening to him last night. I also got a Big Finish show called Echoes of Insanity, with Karlen as Willie in 1968, just after he was shot outside Maggie’s place by cops who mistakenly thought he was her kidnapper. He’s at Windcliffe being treated by Dr. Hoffman, while Angelique probes his subconscious mind (for information that surely would have been easier for a witch to ascertain elsewhere, but what the hey….) Karlen is as good as ever, as is Lara Parker. I enjoyed delving so far back into the storyline, to when Barnabas (AND Julia!) was far more sinister and dangerous. My one complaint is the way Willie kept denigrating Julia’s physical appearance – Shadows writer Sam Hall, her husband, would never have tolerated such schoolyard chicanery. He keeps talking about her beady eyes, bird-like physique, mean thin lips, and how she’s “not the kind of woman most men would ever want.” Yeah, she was hypnotizing and grooming him to take a murder rap, but I was dismayed by all the insults about her physicality --- Other than that minor beef, an excellent show I can highly recommend!

Lovebirds Veronica May and Lindsay White
Outtakes: SONG THAT DESCRIBES YOUR LIFE? May: “Right Said Fred, I’m Too Sexy, especially the lyric ‘I’m too sexy for Milan.’ It’s a really long story of how I once flew to Milan, and the security guard wouldn’t let me in, because apparently I was too sexy.” WORST MOVIE THAT YOU LOVE? White: “I have a pretty high tolerance for bad movies. Maybe Mr. Magoo?” May: “Cannibal! the Musical. The first time I watched it in high school, I nearly peed my pants.” IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY FREE MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTION? May: “Mad Magazine. I collected them as a child. This explains a lot about me.” BIGGEST REGRET? White: “Every choice I ever made led me here, so I regret none of it.” May: “Not saving my money. I only suffer from this regret at the end of every month, though.”

Now You Know: Trap Gold
I liked the Old In Out, so I look forward to checking out the new combo. These Now You Know capsules are consistently excellent, introducing little-covered new bands, in a conversational format that invites interest and curiosity about the subjects -- Bands like Trap Gold should consider providing the Reader with a sample MP3 playable below their Blurt -- to setup a page in the Local Music Database and submit an MP3, any band, old OR new, can do so via
http://www.sandiegoreader.com/band/edit/
Once you set up your Reader page, you can add MP3s via
http://www.sandiegoreader.com/mp3/upload
If you've got a page on the website BEFORE a Blurt about you runs, your page and MP3s can be linked below the article. Plus, being in the Local Music Database puts you in the running for daily mainpage spotlights, event previews, and musician profiles, and it provides direct access to the events department for listing your upcoming events ---

Wes Craven's New Nightmare
I just spent a weekend screening ALL the Nightmare films (only two of which I[d seen before), as well as the Nightmare Cafe and Freddy's Nightmares TV shows - everything except the recent Englund-less remake. And ya know what? This was by far the best of the lot! Mr. Shepherd is correct in stating that it "gives you more to chew on than all previous Freddy adventures combined." Having put some distance between himself and the New Frankenstein he created, director Craven is able to look at Freddie thru the eyes of someone who saw his monster go from menace to cartoon character. By breaking the fourth wall a bit and tackling Freddy as a bit of fiction coming to life in the real world, the movie manages to be both familiar and innovative. We all know Freddy and what he does, what he's all about - or do we? The Freddy's Nightmares TV show (currently running on the Chiller network) had a few surprisingly good episodes too. The hour long shows are usually split into two stories, with both revolving around the same characters and storyline --- the proverbial "better than you'd think."

Velvet Goldmine
The unmade sequel: "Arthur later became Batman, the ultimate anti-glam hero...." That was a terrific homemade YouTube mashup, combining footage from Goldmine with Christian Bale's later Batman films, along with a few snippets of previous Bat-films. Unfortunately, it keeps getting pulled for TOS violations --- pity, the shots of Curt Wild transforming into Robin AND Batgirl were hysterical! As was a brief bit with Adam West's Batman appearing to sing and dance to "TV Eye" (!?!), which appears the PERFECT accompaniment for that "Bat-Dance" they ripped off in Pulp Fiction....

Davit Buck Talks Zillion Happy Volts
Outtakes: ARE YOUR LYRICS AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL? “Sometimes. Zillion Happy Volts has a song, Deaf in the Eye: ‘They will never hear my vision/I will never see their sound.’” HOW WEIRD A KID WERE YOU? “When I was around twelve, I tried to sell my farts. After eating lots of beans, I pulled my pants down and farted into bottles, and put a cap onto the bottles. I made labels that said Old Black Magic Stink Bombs.” BEEN YELLED AT LATELY? “Last December, my mother yelled at me for not calling her and my brother on their birthday. She was saying I had a hard heart, like my father.” UNFULFILLED AMBITION? “To see the end of the world.” GREATEST FEAR? “Going blind.” BEST PICKUP LINE? “I haven’t used ‘Wanna makeout?’ in years, but it used to work very well. Now, I find not talking works the best.”

Pussycat Theaters - a comprehensive history of a California dynasty
RIP Pussycat co-founder and filmmaker Dave Friedman, who passed away on Valentine's Day at the age of 87 -- in interviews done for the Reader last year and in 2009, he provided invaluable insight into the early days of the Pussycat Theatre chain ---— February 17, 2011 5:18 p.m.
He keeps talking about her beady eyes, bird-like physique, mean thin lips, and how she’s “not the kind of woman most men would ever want.” Yeah, she was hypnotizing and grooming him to take a murder rap, but I was dismayed by all the insults about her physicality --- Other than that minor beef, an excellent show I can highly recommend!— February 17, 2011 2:21 p.m.
I only suffer from this regret at the end of every month, though.”— February 16, 2011 5:49 p.m.

Now You Know: Trap Gold
I liked the Old In Out, so I look forward to checking out the new combo. These Now You Know capsules are consistently excellent, introducing little-covered new bands, in a conversational format that invites interest and curiosity about the subjects -- Bands like Trap Gold should consider providing the Reader with a sample MP3 playable below their Blurt -- to setup a page in the Local Music Database and submit an MP3, any band, old OR new, can do so via http://www.sandiegoreader.com/band/edit/ Once you set up your Reader page, you can add MP3s via http://www.sandiegoreader.com/mp3/upload If you've got a page on the website BEFORE a Blurt about you runs, your page and MP3s can be linked below the article. Plus, being in the Local Music Database puts you in the running for daily mainpage spotlights, event previews, and musician profiles, and it provides direct access to the events department for listing your upcoming events ---— February 16, 2011 5:40 p.m.
The hour long shows are usually split into two stories, with both revolving around the same characters and storyline --- the proverbial "better than you'd think."— February 15, 2011 11:19 a.m.

As was a brief bit with Adam West's Batman appearing to sing and dance to "TV Eye" (!?!), which appears the PERFECT accompaniment for that "Bat-Dance" they ripped off in Pulp Fiction....— February 5, 2011 8:05 p.m.
Stringers Are NOT Reader Reporters, plus Taylor Swift's Taylor Guitar, Local Blogger Silenced By Killers, Wavves Calls SD "Wretched," SDMA Fishwrap, Zappa, Weiland, Axl, Blackheart, Ms. Beatle, Halford, Mower, more

Now, I find not talking works the best.”— January 31, 2011 1:47 a.m.
